Stats analysis for whether there is a correlation betwen some variables

Description: I'm working on an academic paper looking to see what careers medical students wish to pursue and why. I have a big excel spread sheet (445 respondents and multiple responses)and have been battling with SPSS but can't take any more! I can do the simple bit e.g. frequencies of females choosing surgery, frequencies of those who have a parent who is a doctor and are in the third year of training but am really struggling with the correlation and stat significance. I think I need either chi squared or fishers exact to work out things like - is there a statistically significant difference between students who feel that intellectual stimulation is highly important and want to be surgeons compared to those who want to be GPs? My gut feeling is that it is not a massive project and someone who knows what they are doing could manage it in a few hours, but I don't think I can do it myself! Can you help?
