Simple desktop application with Java

Need to develop simple desktop application to manage the scheduling of other Java class. There are 2 application windows, one is the client GUI to retrieve all jobs list from database and the other is the server non GUI that keeps running and manage the scheduling.

Client GUI needs only to send job id to the non GUI part (over local network) and the non GUI process will retrieve detail job info from the database and executes according to the schedule.

The application is desktop so what it means with the term server above refers to a computer (not actual server) so no servlet.
Database is Sql Server Express which is downloadable for free.

Job needs to be completed within a week (or less).
