Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
I need to understand how different types of fabric (and the yarn they are made from) affect microbial growth, in particular the microbes that cause body odour.
I am commissioning a research paper of about 4-5 pages of A4 to attach to my undershirt sales website. This content will service as additional detail for those that want more science based knowledge to back up the following two assertions...
1. Viscose fabrics are better than cotton at inhibiting the growth of microbes that cause BO, and viscose made from bamboo fibre is best of all.
2. Viscose fabrics absorb more water (per gram of fabric) than cotton and bamboo fabric is better than regular fabrics.
Notes on references
The reader is likely to be detailed and skeptical so the paper must cite its references, as any research paper would
References used must be credible, i.e. independent of a manufacturer
Notes on Style
Begin with the overview and then home in on detail. Give an overview of the fabrics, how they are made and what they are. Give and overview of what microbes cause odour. What factors are affect their growth in fabrics. How do fabrics differ in their composition (e.g. shape, thickness and smoothness of fibres) and how that affects growth or ability to absorb water.
Then home in on the details and comparisons. Perhaps compare using a table structure as a summary. Remember I primarily interested in Cotton, Normal Viscose and Viscose made from bamboo. However if the information is there it may also be interesting to additionally compare with wool and polyester.
Gotchas
My two assertions my not be correct - in which case I need to know this via the research.
It may be difficult to prove either way - in which case the paper should present a balance with arguments on both sides
It may be difficult to identify credible sources - do your best, use gut instinct.
There are some special patented viscoses out there called Tencel (or Modal). I'm not sure what they are or why they are special - research in this area would be helpful
Some official bodies (like UK advertising standards) say there is no difference between regular viscose and viscose made from Bamboo (but they may not have done sufficient research yet). The Japanese and Chinese beg to differ (but they have a vested interest). Take care of these biases in your work. I have both types of fabric and they do feel different.
The end goal is to be more informed about these types of fabric and how their composition affects their ability to absorb sweat and smell less - with references to back up the claims. Its got to be well written and credible with sufficient detail to satisfy the technically minded.
