'Fabricated accounts of cannabis fuelled violence began cropping up. Using the yellow press, a term used for unethical sensationalist journalism using exaggerated headlines to sell newspapers, Anslinger propelled his message to the national level.
Needing the Bureau to prove it’s worth, Harry Anslinger concocted a plan to deceive the public.
Using a series of police-like reports, Anslinger peddled his anti-cannabis sentiment to the mass media. Named the “Gore Files”, a series of reports detailing 200 horrifically violent crimes, which Harry attributed to cannabis use.
One case went as follows, “An entire family was murdered by a youthful addict in Florida. When officers arrived at the home, they found the youth staggering about in a human slaughterhouse. With an axe he had killed his father, mother, two brothers, and a sister. He seemed to be in a daze ... He had no recollection of having committed the multiple crimes. The officers knew him ordinarily as a sane, rather quiet young man; now he was pitifully crazed…”
Research since then has shown that the boy suffered from severe mental illness. Violence was not brought on by his cannabis use, like this, 198 of the 200 cases used by Anslinger in the “Gore Files” have since been proved to be falsely attributed to cannabis.
The remaining two cases you ask? Neither could be disproved. No records existed.'
Thanks for your submission.
