Freddie the Centipede becomes a Fire Fighter
Once upon a time there was a Centipede named Freddie. He was known
for his bright colorful feet, which were blue, red and yellow. He
also was the only centipede in the village to have 177 legs. His
siblings only had between 15-38 legs. Freddie was the youngest child
of 3 and his father worked at the local fire station as a chief fire
fighter. Freddie wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps so he would
volunteer his weekends working at the fire house. He was responsible
for shinning up the fire truck, taking care of the Dalmatian dogs, and
most importantly hosting the weekly chili cook offs. He loved sliding
down the fire house poles and riding in the big red truck with his
dad. Freddie was of great help to the fire staff because he could
stretch his body and see exactly where the fire was extinguish. His
dad taught him everything about firefighting. His dad could not
express enough about the importance of gaining the trust of people who
there are rescuing. He also gave him courses on Carbon Monoxide and
how to detect the levels in the home. His father also gave him
instruction on the proper ways to put out grease fires without
damaging most of the kitchen area. Freddie had participated in over
60 fires with the team and new soon that he would be a member.
After 6 years of volunteering, Freddie was an expert
and he wanted to join the force. Freddie had an advantage, if there
was a fire at a building that had multiple floors he could rotate the
buckets of water faster than any other insect in the village. Freddie
belonged to the Scutigera centipede species. His legs were hairy and
allowed him a solid grip on many objects. In fact, he never had to
use a latter instead he could hoist his body on any wall while
rotating the water buckets.
He would seem like a great candidate for the fire team, but there was
only one downfall, Freddie was oh so clumsy. There was no way his
father would let him join the fighter force. He had to come up with a
plan to show his father that he can be dependable and hired as a fire
fighter. He had so many legs and always tripped on him. He had to
start training on a sport that would give him balance and strength.
He began doing kick boxing at the local YMCA. He found that using the
punching and the kicking techniques allowed him to keep his balance.
He trained for 60 days, and decided that he would ask his dad if he
could take the firefighters exam. Freddie passed with flying colors.
He received stellar grades on the spatial recognition section, he was
able to run 150 stairs while carrying 30 pounds and he did not even
break a sweat. He was the first to complete the Charged Hose Pull;
Forcible Entry and Ventilation; and Fire Extinguishing and Rescue
within a 12 minute span. He even made record time with dressing
himself in uniform. His uniform consisted on 5 pieces; helmet,
gloves, bunker coat and a self-contained breathing apparatus. One
advantage Freddie had was his many legs, he was able to complete the
victim rescue test (dragging a 185 pound dummy ) in less than six
minutes.
Freddie's dad was so amazed and proud of the growth that son made and
new that he had no choice but to promote him to Chief Lieutenant.
