THE MAGAZINE
The Magazine is a new quarterly current affairs magazine which raises awareness of topics under-reported in the mainstream media. Available in Print & Digital formats, the magazine is distributed nationally and internationally to a broad audience.
The magazine is non-commercial (no cover price, no adverts) and has a focus on innovative design features to stand out in the sector and engage those who wouldn’t usually read a current affairs title.
THE ROLE
The designer will work from an established template (already set by the Design Consultant) and modify and customise the layout as per the design brief set by the Managing Editor.
The majority of the work is laying out the content, tweaking and customising the existing template and adding light touches to the background design. However, there are three key areas where a highly bespoke custom design is required:
- Front Cover Illustration
- Travel Section.
- Inside Back Cover Advert
THE DESIGNER
It is important that the designer is attracted to the ethos of the magazine and associated campaign website (details provided after application), in addition to the design work itself. More details will be sent to those with relevant experience after application.
You must be able to travel to central London or Manchester for an initial meeting before we can hire you via PPH and appoint you to the team.
Qualifications:
Whilst a degree in graphic design is preferred we do consider applications from those without a relevant qualification if a strong portfolio of print magazine experience is available.
Experience:
Ideally the designer will have a portfolio of print magazine design experience where the designer has worked on the project from start to finish and prepared the final print proof.
The designer also needs to be a strong illustrator.
Tools:
The design template is an InDesign file and the designer must have access to this package to complete the job.
THE REWARD
In addition to payment and a large design credit in the magazine, the designer will be part of an exciting and innovative new project which grows with every issue.
As the magazine is a concise 20 pages and involves working from an established template, a highly experienced designer with print magazine design experience can turn this project around in 5 hours from concept to completion including the final print proof and will be paid £20 per hour.
We may sometimes hire those without print design experience with the expectation it will take longer to complete with payment of between £10-15 per hour.
As the magazine is non-commercial (no cover price and no adverts), the designer will need to work within the above timeframes and payment rates as there is a fixed budget of £100 for each issue.
Please note: As the magazine is published quarterly and the design stage is close to deadline, we utilise a pool of freelance graphic designers to complete each issue to ensure that someone is always available should the previous designer be attached to another project.
TO APPLY
You must be able to travel to central London or Manchester for an initial meeting before we can hire you via PPH and appoint you to the team.
If you would like to join the team please apply below your CV and a link to your portfolio and we will be in touch if you have relevant experience.
