Help with understanding and using Wordpress in Edinburgh

I need help in understanding Wordpress and downloading it to my laptop. I then need to design a simple content based site, uploading some photos and copy. I have full instructions on discs about how to do this but I am still confused.
I would have thought the above would take about 3 hours.

After all this has been achieved, I will need ongoing support from the right person. Designing and uploading sales and squeeze pages etc etc

Firstly I just want to achieve what I have written in the first paragraph above.
