I'm looking for a full environment concept illustration of a fantasy city scene.
Preface: I've not used this site before, but have worked with a handful of freelancer artists and illustrators in the past on personal projects, as well as professionally within the games industry. Budget is flexible depending on quality.
The scene takes place in Deveros, capital city of The Aldarin Empire. This empire is essentially a fantasy variant of the Roman Republic/Early Empire, with magic, mythical creatures, and slight differences. The city is very loosely based on Rome and Venice in style. The camera should be standing slightly elevated as if standing atop a roof, looking across the Ivora River that goes through the entire city. We are looking at the Fluminatis Bridge, which is a covered market bridge that connects the middle class residential area of Fluminis (the side of the river we are standing on) to the incredibly wealthy, political district of Consentius.
I’ve included moodboard references at the top and bottom of the reference document, with more accurate reference pictures sitting in the middle and having lines pointing towards the areas they correspond to.
--Buildings--
Most buildings in Deveros are incredibly opulent and grand, often made of limestone and marble with red terracotta roofs. They feature painted surfaces, gold features, and small carved statues into the stone (especially in the Consentius district buildings). I’ve included references for these types of opulent buildings to draw inspiration from.
Buildings to the south side of the river, in Fluminis, are more basic and residential, following the traditional Domus style of house. I’ve included references for these.
At the very very north of the painting there would be a golden fountain displaying one of the gods of the Aldarins. She should be made entirely of gold and holding a pot which should be spouting water out of it into a fountain around her.
From some of the buildings there should be the Aldarin Empire’s flag, which I’ve included to the right of the reference document. It is a purple flag with red and gold stripes, with a golden gryphon upon it. This was a flag I commissioned and is the exact flag that should be seen in the city.
--The Bridge--
The bridge would look similar to the Rialto Bridge of Venice, though with more marble, pillars and market stalls visible within. It should look busy. There are small flags hanging underneath the bridge which should be coloured red and purple, with a recent festival taking place.
--Streets--
The streets are paved with pristine cobblestone, and would have people walking along it. The city should look alive and thriving, with many figures going up into the bridge and along the walkways on either side of the river.
There would be plenty of flora, trees, greenery, plants etc. These would be placed alongside the walkways next to the river, or within/between the expansive, open buildings of the city. No need to have too much but just enough to make the city seem natural and green.
A falcon should be flying overhead to give a sense of perspective and scale of the piece.
--River--
The river should have some activity going on it too. There are two types of boats on the river:
Barges - These would have a single mast and sail, and be carrying heavy cargo such as marble slabs, fish, or lumber.
Rapida - Rapida are essentially magical speedboats (though they wouldn’t have a visible engine). They are powered with arcane energy and are slightly smaller than the barges. These are operated by a single person, and would carry small cargo such as crates, barrels, sacks or people. The closest modern equivalent would be the water taxis of Venice, though it looks much more like an ancient, wooden boat. I’ve found a decent reference picture for this which is on the far right of the reference document.
There should be several wooden mooring posts along the southern side of the river in Fluminis, with a small dock for the boats to moor at.
The northern side of the river is raised up slightly and has mosaics alongside the raised surface. These mosaics would prominently feature gryphons, as they are the national animal of the Aldarins, as well as heroic figures of old Aldarin warriors and poets.
There are some ducks on the river bobbing about.
