WHALEFISH: Networking Conservation, Research and Careers in Marine Science
Our world’s oceans evoke a sense of wonder, awe and mystery for millions of people. For some it becomes a lifelong passion, a journey of discovery and a career that leads to some of the most rewarding and memorable experiences life can offer. At Whalefish, we combine the experience and knowledge of marine scientists to promote education, awareness and networking opportunities for those who wish to help with our primary goal of improving marine conservation and research opportunities.
Whalefish is a new international marine conservation network of marine scientists launched in January 2014. Our philosophy is to deliver insight on the research and conservation of marine mammals and fisheries. We aim to improve conservation by delivering an openly informative resource for education, promotion of scientific research and as a platform for networking between organisations, students, professionals and the public to improve access to opportunities in marine science.
Social Media
Social media plays an important role in improving awareness in today’s society and are harnessing this by interacting daily with our global following on social feeds such as Facebook and Twitter on the most current marine science related research and initiatives.
Networking
Our main focus is to provide a platform for marine science students, graduates and professionals to network with associated organisations, institutions and industry to identify opportunities for enhancing careers in marine science related professions. The Whalefish website (www.whalefish.org) is regularly updated with current short course opportunities and internships from a wide range of marine subjects. We also offer opportunities for marine professionals to share and discuss their research findings through blog articles.
Film & Media
The Whalefish team have experience in documentary film work having produced a televised feature entitled ‘Whales of Patagonia’ which addresses the conservation issues affecting marine mammals in northern Patagonia, Argentina. The team have continued plans to utilise digital media in promoting field work using goPro cameras to produce short features of daily research activities on a variety of projects.
Career Development
While the focus is on delivering insight and improving awareness of marine conservation issues, it is additionally our wish to attract and inspire the next generation of marine scientists through monthly career profiles which focus on researchers who are making significant contributions to marine conservation, and to help current students and graduates find the opportunities to continue their professional development. It is our hope that future generations of scientists will find the opportunities they are looking for in marine science through reference to Whalefish.
