Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Industry: Technology
Design details: I need a design for a circuit to speed control a brushess motor used in a fan. This will be accomplished by varying the supply voltage to the 12V fan between 5V and 12V.
Different fans may be connected to the circuit with a maximum load of 1.5A @ 12V.
A variable voltage linear regulator solution is not suitable due to the high amount of heat it would produce.
A very simple PWM based control method is wanted, where a microcontroller will measure the voltage at the fan and its software will adjust the PWM period to cause the voltage to reach the desired output voltage, so that the fan is run at the desired speed. The software control method will provide a simple method of compensation for different fan loads.
Please see attached circuit. I need a designer who is knowledgeable in the specification of inductors in circuits of this type to specify the inductor, diode (assuming needed), capacitor and mosfet. Components should be surface mount if possible (maybe not possible for the inductor?), physically as small as possible and low cost (more important than size). The voltage provided to the brushless motor in the fan does not need to be perfect DC . There can still be some ripple as the fan will operate correctly with a certain amount of ripple. However, whilst the circuit could be made to work with no inductor, an inductor needs to be used to reduce the noise put on the 12V power supply from this circuit, as the circuit will be repeated 5 times and will be operating from a PC power supply along with other PC peripherals.
All component need to be available in stock from Farnell in the UK.
I need the design as soon as possible.
Ideas for the visual style: None
