Sustainable retrofit / green deal proposal

The project requires you to take on the role of a Green Deal/ECO assessor who had been asked by a housing association to call at TWO out of the three identical terraced houses and offer each occupant an appropriate energy conservation package.

The details of the circumstances for each of the occupants are:

• Private tenants who’s landlord is interested in solid wall insulation only (Carbon Emission Reduction Obligation or CERO)
• Owner occupiers (no benefits) that are interested in a full range of measures including renewable energy technology
• Social tenants that taking up measures under the Carbon Saving Community Obligation or CSCO).

You need to write a report for each of the occupants. The report should include:

• A brief introduction explaining why the work on the house needs to be done in terms of sustainable development and global warming
• A description of each measure and how it performs to reduce energy consumption, and/or carbon emissions
• A detailed description (including installation details where applicable of how each measures can be integrated into the building and work together in different packages - (if not able to draw details this is not a problem but advise and suggestions as to t possible)
• A calculation that shows the annual saving to householder bills, the overall cost of the package of measures, and the annual payback over time. If the package is financed under the Green Deal, the report will show how the package conforms to the Golden Rule.
• A section on behaviour change that explains how much saving might be made on the way the house is managed, and the range of ways that behaviour alone can reduce energy consumption.

In order to complete the economic calculation you will need to establish typical current annual energy bill for the terraced house. Drawing of the house type will be provided.


KEY OBJECTIVES OF THE TASK

The presentation should make clear:

1.​The main technical interventions available to retrofit existing buildings to consume less energy. This should be communicated with the aid of drawings and diagrams (or recommendation of) showing the improvements to the building fabric and services

2.​The key issues around the practical installation of the measures, and how they can combine to give an effective package of measures for different building types.

3.​The cost implications of the package of measures with reference to typical existing energy bills, the savings that can be made after installation, and the golden rule (where the package is financed by the Green Deal).
