Description
I’ve no experience building, quick to learn and enthusiastic.
I would like an architect plan for the structure. And may need some assistance with choosing correct dimensions and support.
If of interest maybe it would be easier to discuss.
But the premise of the greenhouse design is to maintain heat throughout the night, most greenhouses will loose heat due to lack of insulation. This design forfeits light for warmth by only having the south facing wall transparent. This will be polycarbonate. The other sides will be either metal sheets (lots of this on my allotment when I took it over) or OSB.
The frame will be wood which I will purchase. I will need to work out the appropriate truss support for the weight and span.
The dimensions planned are L340cm W169cm (2:1 ration is important for design)
The south facing end will be in the ground whereas the north end will be build on top of a concrete base already present. The idea is so you can grow directly into the soil inside the greenhouse. Therefore the south support will need a base build on soil.
The transparent roof on the south needs an about 45 degree angle.
There will be guttering on the north side to collect rain water.
Internally there will be a door on the east side only and a ventilation grid on the west. The north, east and west walls will have some form of insulation. With the concrete base already insitu taking up 41cm width acting as a heat sponge. Leaving 128 cm of open ground to grow in.
I’ve attached some of my drawings and doodles.
Let me know if it’s something you can help with, thanks, ash.

Hello Ash,
Thank you for sharing the details of your project. I’m genuinely excited about your plan to build a passive solar greenhouse, and I believe my expertise aligns perfectly with what you're looking for.
With extensive experience in designing energy-efficient structures, I specialize in sustainable building solutions like passive solar systems, which are crucial for maintaining heat while optimizing material use. Your vision of a greenhouse that focuses on retaining heat throughout the night by balancing insulation and light is both smart and feasible, and I’d love to help you bring it to life.
Here’s how I can assist:
Architectural Plans: I will develop detailed architectural drawings, considering the appropriate dimensions, insulation, and truss support for your specific materials. This will ensure structural integrity, especially with the unique materials you're reusing, such as metal sheets and OSB.
Optimized Design: I will ensure the 2:1 ratio is adhered to, with attention to critical factors like the south-facing wall’s transparency, the 45-degree roof angle, and the rainwater collection system. Together, we can fine-tune your design to maximize heat retention and create a well-insulated greenhouse.
Structural Guidance: I’ll work with you to determine the most appropriate wood trusses, supports, and foundations, particularly for the south wall which will be built into the ground. This will provide the strength needed to support your design over time.
Collaborative Approach: As you mentioned, you're a quick learner and enthusiastic about this project. I’m happy to work closely with you, explaining each step and ensuring you have a complete understanding of the design and construction process. If you'd like, we can discuss the finer details directly to make the process smoother.
I’m confident that with my experience and your vision, we can design a passive solar greenhouse that not only meets your expectations but also stands out as an efficient, sustainable structure.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you’d like to discuss further. I’d be more than happy to review your drawings and provide additional insights or suggestions.
Looking forward to helping you build something extraordinary!
