I'm a lawyer originally from the US who lived and worked in the UK from January 2017- November 2019. In November 2019, when my work visa was soon ending and i was leaving my job, I got married, left the UK and moved permanently to Portugal with my husband (he is a UK citizen; we arrived in Portugal pre-Brexit and claimed residency. I applied for my Portuguese residency card upon entry into the country and received my Portuguese residency permit in August 2020). I maintained (and still maintain) my UK bank account and still have clients in the UK (for freelance legal consulting services). Deloitte handled all my tax returns covering the period that I worked in the UK (including for the remainder of the year after I left my job (meaning that I filed 2019/2020 UK taxes). I have been compliant with all required taxes in the US and Portugal from the time I arrived in Portugal through to the present. I assumed I did not have to pay any further taxes to the UK once I left the country and obtained residency in Portugal. However, my previous workplace in the UK just received a letter from HRMC for me saying that I have a late filing penalty for the year 2021/2022 of £1200. Can I make this go away? Also, if HMRC are coming after me for 2021/2022 taxes, presumably they think I owe 2020/2021 taxes. Is there any way to check, and make this pre-emptively go away also? I would like to be in good standing in the UK, as I will most likely move back there at some point with my husband in later years.
Thank you,
Rebecca

One issue is that HMRC will require you to authorise someone to act on your behalf. By the time you've done that, you might as well speak with HMRC yourself...at least to understand the actual issue. It sounds as though you have simply forgotten to inform HMRC that you are no longer a UK tax resident. In view of the circumstances, you should still be able to appeal and seek cancellation of the fine. My wife did something similar successfully recently. We left the UK around the same time as you. Best decision we ever made. We return to the UK for 3 months per year...and live in a clean, peaceful, fair-tax country for the other 9 months. Portugal is lovely. Good luck.
