Hello
I am a sole trader who received advice on setting up a Ltd company and now regret doing so. As someone who is not business-minded (and finds maths a bit terrifying), I am struggling with keeping everything organised and filed. The fact that I am a US citizen living in the UK complicates matters!
*** PLEASE ONLY REPLY IF YOU CAN HELP WITH BOTH UK AND US TAXES ***
Note also I do not know what the going rate is for this type of work so have put a high hourly rate to increase my chances of finding someone who can do it all.
It is my wish to find someone (or a small firm) who can deal with everything for me and help do my accounting and bookkeeping on an ongoing basis. I'm very happy to work remotely.
Some quick facts:
- I have been freelance / sole trader for the last 15 years (since my children were born)
- I set up two Ltd companies on 1 May 2018 under the advice of a tax accountant friend (one for my design business, one for my nutritional therapy business)
- I realised that doing two sets of books and paying two tax return fees was not sustainable. I quickly became overwhelmed. I closed one company down in August 2019
- I have not filed a company return for either yet
- I have been good at filing a UK tax return every year and do this myself online
- I have not filed US tax returns since 2014 (because of a very stressful family situation, it slipped one year and then it was easy to just ignore the following years...)
- I do not make enough money to pay US tax (I'm well within the top bracket) but I know this is no excuse for not filing - but at least there will be no penalties
- I have kept one Ltd company and have a business account with Barclays
- I have been paying for Xero since June but have yet to successfully connect my Xero account with Barclays. It's been a nightmare! They kept sending me around in circles and I'm still told 'there is a problem with your feed'.
If you are up for a challenge sorting out this mess I'd love to hear from you. I've tried so hard to find someone who can do all of my books so am helping I can find that person / firm here!
Thank you!
