Description
Experience Level: Entry
Conduct business, funding, and growth trajectory research on specific US, EU, and UK on-line marketplaces (e.g. Depop, Vinted, Etsy, Vivino, Whatnot, around 10 in total, full list to be provided).
Data needed:
• Date established in initial launch market
• Timeline of expansion across key countries
• All Funding/Investment rounds and amounts, from initial startup
• Market valuation at each funding round
• Time to profitability e.g. 1st profit occurred in year 3 after startup
• Active users at various time points e.g. Y1, Y3, Y5, today
• No. of sellers and buyers active on platform at key time points
• Revenue at key time points
• And some other metrics
This is not a “financial analysis” per se. But an understanding of commonly used company metrics, valuation principles (pre and post money) , etc is essential.
All the above information should be available on-line through various sources – Wikipedia, company web sites, SEC filings, articles written about the company, web sites that track funding investments, Chat GPT, etc (see below).
Our objective is to collate information and put together the “journey” taken by each marketplace from inception onwards, seen from the lens of the above key metrics.
Delivery: a one page key bullet point overview of each marketplace, an excel table will all information on all the marketplaces
Examples of research materials using "Vinted" as an example:
