Description
Experience Level: Entry
Description:
I am a UK-based energy consultant. I receive commission payments from energy suppliers (B2B). My annual VAT taxable turnover is currently below the £90,000 registration threshold, but I am considering voluntary VAT registration.
My business expenses include:
Rent (VAT applies)
Phone & internet (VAT applies)
Office equipment (VAT applies)
No significant stock or goods for resale
I need expert advice on the following:
Whether voluntary VAT registration is financially beneficial for my specific business model.
Whether the VAT Cash Accounting Scheme is appropriate for me and how it interacts with my commission income (to avoid paying VAT before I am paid by energy suppliers).
Any risks or downsides specific to a commission-based consultant (e.g., partial exemption, flat rate scheme suitability, or any excluded transactions under cash accounting).
A clear recommendation on whether to register voluntarily now or wait.
A summary of ongoing obligations if I register (VAT returns, Making Tax Digital, record-keeping).
Deliverables:
A short written report (or recorded video call summary) with a clear yes/no recommendation and reasoning.
An explanation of cashflow impact using example figures (which I will provide).
I do not require ongoing accounting or bookkeeping at this stage – this is purely for advice.
Required expertise:
UK VAT specialist
Experience with consultants / commission-based B2B services
Familiarity with HMRC Cash Accounting Scheme rules
