Introducing our new payments process for freelancers

We’ve updated the way we pay our freelancers to make it clearer and easier to know when you’ll be able to access your funds. We understand that planning your finances isn’t easy, so we’ve made these changes to make it as simple as possible for you to know when your funds will be available to withdraw.

Clearing periods

Before any withdrawal of funds, we have to do a certain amount of checks for fraud prevention purposes. This is known as the clearing period. As we have grown as a business, we’ve been required to do more checks before we can release funds. Clearing periods are needed for us to protect you and your money from fraudulent criminal activity.

The length of your clearing period will be determined by how much you have earned on PeoplePerHour in the previous two calendar months.

How does it work?

Express clearing: 3 days

Freelancers with total earnings of over £6,000 (or currency equivalent) in the past 2 calendar months will be able to access their funds after 3 days of a buyer releasing an invoice.

Fast clearing: 7 days

Freelancers with total earnings of over £2,000 (or currency equivalent) in the past 2 calendar months will be able to access their funds after 7 days of a buyer releasing an invoice.

Standard clearing: 14 days

Freelancers with less than £2,000 (or currency equivalent) in the past 2 calendar months will be able to access their funds within 14 days of a buyer releasing an invoice.

For example, if today is the 17th June, we will look at your earnings between the 1st April and 31st May. If your earnings in April and May are £3,200, then your clearing period will be 7 days. The clearing period encompasses weekends as well as weekdays. So, using the example above with a clearing period of 7 days, if a buyer pays your invoice at 1.15pm on Thursday 17th June, your funds will be available to withdraw on Thursday 24th June at 1.15pm.

Following the clearing period, all withdrawal requests will be processed by the PeoplePerHour team within 2 working days.

Clear and easy to understand

We understand that you probably don’t know the exact amount that you’ve earned on our platform during the last two calendar months. That’s why we do the hard work for you to make it clear and easy to understand when you’ll be able to withdraw your earnings. Simply go to the “My Money” tab in the payments section of your account, and you’ll be able to see exactly how much money you’ve earned in the previous two months, and how long your clearing period will be as a result.

We’d like to thank you, and all of our loyal freelancer community in advance for your patience, and we hope that this new payment process will provide more clarity for you moving forward.

How about an option to pay for “Express withdrawal processing”?

We have one for our profile, another for proposals, wouldn’t hurt to have one for funds.

At least I can choose to pay extra or wait for 7-14 days.

You know, in case of emergencies.

Hi Declan, Can you confirm whether the processing time once withdrawn is going back to the old 48 hours or is that now staying at the 7 days+ that we are seeing at the moment? For example, I am a £2k and below earner i would imagine, so I know I will wait the 14 days before I withdraw. That’s clear for me now. But, then do I have to wait 48 hours (as in 2 days) or 48 hours (as in 7+ days) for the funds to reach my PayPal account? Which then takes my payment to funds being… Read more »

It’s not that clear!

If I withdraw my money today (17/06/2021) and I’m on a 14 day clearing period, when will I receive my money in my account?

Thanks Declan. A follow up question. I had an invoice paid today and withdrew the full funds from my account today which included some earlier invoices which had been paid throughout June. Do I have to now wait until 01/07 for the full withdrawal or will the payments from my earlier invoices be released and paid earlier in batches?

P.s. I’m not necessarily against this new system – you have to do checks, but I just want to understand the timings and the process so I know when to withdraw my earnings.

This is a very unhelpful system change. Very few writing freelancers will have earned over £2,000 in 2 months, which essentially means we’re guaranteed to be waiting over 14 days for our payments. These ‘checks’ were introduced months ago and led to delay after delay.

Very disappointed to see you’re sticking with this system. Will be switching freelancer site.

2 weeks clearing is an absolute disgrace and simply a method of profiteering from interest rates on freelancer’s money. Simply base your clearing time on percentage costs if you absolutely must (instant transfer = 2%, 3 days = 1.5%, 5 days = 1%, 10 days = .05%). What you’re doing will cripple freelancers, their cash flow and their businesses!!!

Ah! It’s gonna be something like fiverr.
I love PPH because of the instant fund clearance, I usually dislike waiting for the funds to be accessible that I already earned 🙂

I think it would be great to have the clearing period a maximum of 5days (14 days is huge!).

Anyways, let’s see how other freelancers react on it 🙂

although I like PPH much, due to various reasons, but this new policy is clearly not understood. I do not like Fiverr, and left working there, teh second reason was that they just keep money with them, they enjoy for a whoopish 2 weeks and then transfer to you. That is quite absurd. It would be really sad to see PPH following the same suite, in name of “checking”…

The fast payment of PPH was the unique feature, that’s why I prefer PPH over all other freelancing platforms. I would prefer the old fund clearing process. Please re-think and come with better ideas instead of following Fiverr.

Absolutely, Bilal …

The unique feature has gone … and hasn’t been replaced by a CERT based clearing system, but an income based clearing system which only the top 1% would be able to access. And even then, probably not all of them.

It’s quite unsatisfactory all round …

Well, it’s good PPH has finally come clean about clearing times.

However, it would be a good idea to make clearing times just as clear on the payments page and the pop up on withdrawal. That would reduce anxiety, conspiracy theories … and the flack directed at customer services, who are currently required to give some specious response to queries involving it being a bug and the “relevant team” working to fix it.

It’s not a bug. No one’s working to fix it.

It is not any good at all. There should be no discrimination. The same system should be for everyone. It is total injustice for many freelancers. Peopleperhour owner should think about it.

Amount above 2000 pounds earned should be checked with 14 days policy. Because fraud activitied are in huge payments. Not in a freelancer earning who is earning 200-300 pounds per month.

Please don’t do injustice with new freelancers. Really shameful act.

This is a terrible process! we have to wait from 3-14 days just to be able to withdraw our own money and then wait even longer for it to be processed and available to us? There is a term “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” instant withdrawal is part of what makes PPH so awesome this is a massive massive mistake, having worked on here for close to a decade i have seen many changes some that have worked and some that haven’t and been reversed this is one that needs reversing its an awful process.

14 days seems extreme – and to lower the clearance date on larger amounts of money seems counter-intuitive with your policy of checking for fraud? Why does it need to be higher with smaller amounts versus larger ones? I certainly don’t want the 3 – 7 day clearance periods made bigger, but this just doesn’t seem to make sense?

This doesn’t seem to incentivise top freelancers to stick on the platform when they know they can likely get their payments processed far quicker outside of the platform.

Seems like if I have to wait for 14 days then you must have to think to change the withdrawal fees. The person who is waiting 14 days, will give the £2 processing fee and the person who is enjoying express clearing will pay the same £2 fee. This doesn’t make any sense. Those freelancers who earn more than £6,000 should have more security checks as they earned a lot. He should have to wait for 14 days. Anyways, I think this is not fair at all Based on freelancers’ hard-earned money, withdrawal requests should be the same for everyone, no matter… Read more »

Literally unable to understand this logic 🙁 person who earns more in last 2 months will get benefit. Usually money laundering is huge amount not small amount. As per your defined new process you are encouraging laundering. Secondly, most of time customer/buyer forget or take for granted in accepting the invoice generated by the freelancer. In this case freelancer have to wait for 2 weeks (14 days) for payment move from ESCROW to freelancer account. And than your new process comes in with another 14 days (for freelancers with less than GBP 2000 income). More check should be on high… Read more »

This is ridiculous! Again the freelancers punished, the people who provide your clients with a service. So we complete a small job and if we do not meet the criteria we have to wait 7 days for payment, do you know how this can effect a freelancers cash flow.. Not very good. Maybe one day you will start thinking about the serive provider as an asset rather than a way to make money.

I cannot see why there is a difference in processing times when I would expect the same checks and time required for all withdrawals regardless of value. I have one question in my mind if our client doesn’t pay the invoice and he receives the project and never returns.
What will happen with the unpaid invoices (before unpaid invoices auto-pay within 7 days) when they will be auto-pay and what will be the clearance period to that invoices or will be the same clearance period of that invoices.
