International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Interview with Khushbu Bhumbhani
Each year, the United Nations celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th to champion the inspiring women who are making a huge difference in the world of science and technology. We’re blessed to have some of these women in our freelance community working in a sector that is traditionally dominated by men.
In cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), only one in five professionals (22%) are women. We think that needs to change! That’s why we spoke to Khushbu Bhumbhani – a Java programmer – to find out what her advice is for aspiring tech graduates. Khushbu joined PeoplePerHour 6 years ago and has gone on to become one of our top freelancers working with over 50 different buyers through our marketplace. Check out what she had to say below.

What attracted you to the tech industry?
I became interested in programming during my computer course back in 2008. At that time, programming opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. I was captivated by the idea that with just a few lines of code, one could create intricate software, solve complex problems, and even build entire digital ecosystems. The power and potential of programming fascinated me, igniting a curiosity and passion that has continued to drive my journey in the field.
I was truly amazed at the endless possibilities and the tangible impact that programming could have on shaping the world around us.
How did you get into programming?
I first ventured into programming during my early years of education when I enrolled in a BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) course in 2008. It was during this course that I was introduced to the fascinating world of computers and technology.
The allure of being able to create something tangible from scratch, to solve problems in innovative ways, and to bring ideas to life through code intrigued me immensely. As I delved deeper into the subject, I found myself drawn to the logical challenges and the creative freedom that programming offered.
Over time, my passion for programming grew, and I embarked on a journey of continuous learning and exploration, honing my skills and expanding my knowledge in this dynamic field.
What does a day in the life of your role look like?
A typical day in my role as a programmer is filled with diverse tasks and challenges. I typically start my day by reviewing my project list and deadlines. This involves checking emails and messages to address any client inquiries or updates.
Once I’ve organised my tasks, I focus on my programming projects. This may include writing code, debugging, testing, or researching new technologies to enhance my skills and capabilities.
Throughout the day, I communicate with clients via email or video calls to provide updates on project progress, discuss requirements, and address any concerns. Collaboration with clients is essential, and I strive to maintain clear and effective communication to ensure project success.
Overall, a day in my role as a programmer is a balance of focused work, client communication, and continuous learning. It’s a journey of self-motivation, problem-solving, and innovation as I work to meet the unique needs of each client and deliver exceptional results.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy indulging in music, reading, and exploring new destinations through travel. These activities allow me to unwind and recharge, ultimately contributing to my productivity and creativity in my professional endeavours.
Have you faced many barriers as a woman entering the tech industry?
While entering the tech industry as a woman, I encountered some unique experiences, but I viewed them as opportunities for growth rather than barriers. I found that my perspective and diverse approach brought fresh ideas to the table, enriching the teams I worked with.
Additionally, I’ve been fortunate to have supportive mentors and networks that championed my success and encouraged me to pursue my passions. These experiences have only strengthened my determination to thrive in the tech industry and inspire others to do the same.
What would be your advice to young women looking to enter the tech industry?
My advice to young women looking to enter the tech industry is to embrace their passion and curiosity for technology wholeheartedly. Don’t be afraid to pursue your interests and explore different areas within tech, as there are countless opportunities waiting to be discovered.
Be proactive in seeking out learning opportunities and continuously expand your skills and knowledge. The tech industry is constantly evolving, so staying adaptable and open to new experiences is key to success.
Above all, believe in yourself and your abilities. You have the power to make a significant impact in the tech industry, and your unique perspective and contributions are invaluable. Stay resilient, persevere through challenges, and never underestimate the value of your voice and presence in this dynamic and exciting field.
How do you think attitudes have changed in the industry since the start of your career?
I’ve noticed some positive changes in attitudes within the tech industry since I started working in it. More companies now value diversity and inclusion, aiming to create environments where everyone feels respected and supported.
Additionally, there are more initiatives to support women and other underrepresented groups in tech through mentorship and networking. While there’s still work to do, I’m hopeful about the progress we’re making toward a more inclusive industry.
What’s the best thing about being a woman working in STEM?
The best thing about being a woman in STEM is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful and innovative work that has the potential to make a real difference in the world. STEM fields offer endless opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, and discovery, and being a woman in these fields allows me to bring a unique perspective and approach to the table.
Additionally, being part of a community of diverse and talented individuals who share my passion for STEM is incredibly inspiring and empowering. Together, we can challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and pave the way for future generations of women in STEM.
