NUJ admits first freelance blogger
Posted by peopleperhour.com - 19/11/2007 16:50
In a move that signifies the growing trend for online freelance workers, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has given membership to its first freelance blogger.

Conrad Quilty-Harper, a freelance writer for the Engadget technology website, was initially rejected because he is a full-time student but not enrolled on a media course, Freelance UK reports.

However, on his own blog he commented on the union's U-turn: "Am I really the first to join the NUJ as a full-time blogger?

"It seems like half the Guardian's online staff are bloggers by profession…, and I'm sure there are plenty of other mainstream media reporters out there who are members of the NUJ, yet their primary job role is blogging. What's different about me?"

The general secretary of the NUJ, Jeremy Dear, said: "Whilst we have hundreds, if not thousands of members who write blogs, this is the first person who earns their entire living solely from freelance blogging."

An increasing number of freelance journalists are finding work via online marketplaces such as PeoplePerHour.com.
