Description

Experience Level: Intermediate
Hello, 8-)

We operate the International Society for Mental Health Online (http://www.ismho.org). This address is included so you can look at our site to get a better idea of what we will want on our new site. We are an International community of mostly mental health professionals. We are in the planning stages of moving our website to a new home and supplying it with the functionality we desire. We are contacting you as a potential website technician/programmer and/or designer. Someone who could do the programming we need to create, and maintain, our website. While it may be helpful, it is not necessary that you be able to \"do it all\" as we are hoping to establish working relationships with several programmers. Our plan is to create a fully functional website before we leave our current home. Here is a rough list of \"wants\" for the new website:

1. Automated membership processes with one login for all membership services including initial registration, payment via PayPal/credit card, automated upgrade to membership status to web site, forums, e-list and chat room. Parts of our website are password protected, parts are not. Annual membership renewal reminders and automatic expiry of membership when payment not made. All payment, personal information, and chat room pages should be SSL secured. Other pages should not be SSL secured.

2. Forums (php is fine) that members can automatically access when they've joined and paid. Importing our previous (php) forum posts to new forums.

3. Our own members' e-list that members are automatically signed up for when they join and includes accessible archives of our discussions (the listserv requires archiving capability). Separate e-lists for special groups (exec, research, etc) Option for SSL secured web-based e-lists.

4. A chat room that members can automatically access once they've joined and paid.

5. Our own Wiki. Transferring wiki content to new wiki.

6. Our own blog for paid members.

7. The capacity to save files on our website in a paid member's area, and to save files in a separate password protected, executive area (only accessible to executive members.)

8. The capacity to make changes to our website; to add and remove content. (read, ftp access, cgi-bin, most likely Apache server? ) Yes, almost any web host will give us those things. This is here to say: don't even think about a CMS. We have had a negative experience with a poorly documented CMS that limits our ability to maintain our site. We have less than zero desire to repeat that experience. What we are asking for is not that complex to set up. It is even less complex to maintain, once set up... as long as one knows what to do. That's why we have item 11, below.

9. The capacity to have a members' listing/directory.

10. Professional looking web site.

11. Extensive \"how to\" FAQs so that our web-inexperienced Board members (a bunch of therapist types, get the picture?) can manage most, if not all, site functions. That's one of the reasons we want to keep things simple. For example, CSS drop down menus that are easy to modify. Complex dhtml need not apply.

Many of the above items are offered by popular web hosts as essentially drop-in ready additions to a website, and some of us on the Board could do at least parts of that. But we may not always have members who could do so. Part of our aim is to establish ongoing relationships with professions we can call on for help or to add new design features. Would you be interested in working with us on this project? If so, which parts do you already have the skill-sets to provide? What are your fees? If we are to work together, what would the next step in the process be? Is there any other information you think we should have that will help us make an informed decision? Such as, web host providers you find particularly easy to work with or valuable in what they offer?

Thanks!
