Description
Experience Level: Expert
General information for the business: Accounting firm that uses lots of databases
Industry: Entertainment
Analysis tool: Access
Description of analysis: We have invested in upgrading technology to improve database performance, but it isn't improving performance from a user's standpoint because the problem seems to be the network (or performance over the network, anyway). When a user sits at our server (which is a desktop computer that has been upgraded quite a bit) and creates and runs queries in one of our databases located on our server, it is very fast. BUT when we connect a user's laptop computer directly to the server with an ethernet cable (or run the queries over our network, like we normally do) many of our queries take several minutes to run. Splitting the databases isn't a good solution for us and changing the way we write queries probably isn't either. Even opening large tables takes noticeably longer when we aren't working directly on the server. I have actually hired several IT people to fix this and had zero luck, but none of them seem to be very adept with Access or MySQL, which we would like to move our backends (i.e., tables) to, at least for projects where the tables are too big to be stored in Access. We could probably also uses some help with this once we figure out what our main problem is with the network speed.

You will always experience this problem whilst you attempt to load large Access data file over a network.
You could try to reduce the size of your data or migrate your database to a more useful platform.
please clarify if you have Access datafiles of several gigabytes and also the speed of your LAN.
Happy to discuss further -
Hi,
Could we discuss this further, as there is very limited information to assess the setup and what could be done to improve things.
Is it correct to say also that you wish to migrate from Access to MySQL?
Thanks

Hello Cedar,
Could we discuss a bit more about this?
