Description
Experience Level: Expert
Two linux servers need replacing. One is acting as a PDC and file share, the other is a mail server. Both run Ubuntu 8.04 They are getting a bit old and need replacing, ideally with Ubuntu 12.04 as I have some experience with this. The one running as a PDC fell over recently, ideally I want to set them up so there is some failover either by setting the other up as a BDC or (open to suggestions). Need some help to both design and implement the solution so that I can go on holiday in future without worrying !
Looking for advice on new hardware - 2xGigabit LAN, possibly link aggregation, raid (they are current raid 1) and then help to set them up. Around 80 - 100 users.
Work remotely, possibly need to spend a half day or so in Slough.
Some more info:
Both servers are currently Ubuntu 8.04LTS. Will be buying new hardware, need advice. We have approx 80 users.
Mail server is currently Bynari Insight Server which is a mash up of CyrusImap/Postfix/SpamAssassin/ClamAV/LDAP server and comes with a handy Outlook Address Book which we use on 80 PC's as the Global Address Book. Happy to change, all our Outlook's are 2003 or better now so could support LDAP directory for the same functionality I guess or perhaps we can still use the Bynari Outlook Address Book add-in which is bought and paid for and point it to the LDAP ? The mail server also acts as samba share and round 70 people have an outlook pst stored on it which they use as their main Outlook Data File.
Have around 200GB of PST's on the Mail Server and 300GB of shared data across a dozen or so shares on the Linux box acting as a file server.
For the most part everything works quite well and over the last 7 years between them they have been down maybe half a dozen times so they owe us nothing.
In an ideal world I'd have something fast enough to act as a Mail Server, MySQL server (small database <5GB - 10 concurrent intranet connections),File Server, Samba 4 server acting as the PDC.
I am fairly familiar with Ubuntu so I'm thinking 12.04LTS, Raid 10 with 4 2TB Western Digital RE drives giving us 4TB altogether.
In my ideal world we would have 2 of these boxes, one as a kind of 'warm' spare and some kind of replication going on so that if one fell over, we could change the Config (SMB / Ip Addresses etc) and have the 2nd one up fairly quickly.
I have considered buying 2x Qnap 469 Pro or Synology equivalent as they both support Raid 10 which I like the idea of for a combination of speed and redundancy and both have dual lan for aggregation/fail over/load balancing. If they made one with a faster processor and more memory at a sensible price it would probably be a no brainer for me. Also I don't know how easy it is to get at the smb.conf file behind the scenese with these NAS boxes to make it accept domain logons etc. We had an issue with Windows 7 machines joining the Samba Domain in the past and therefore I'm keen that the version of Samba on whatever we install is 4 as with this and a couple of registry tweaks Windows 7 clients work ok. I know the QNAP / Synology boxes are built on Linux so perhaps someone knows about them, would they be up to the job. I like the failover / replication options both boxes seem to offer.
Hardware budget is around £1500 - £2000. Enough to build 2 decent machines with 8x WD RE drives. I know I won't get a hardware raid controller for that but if I have two replicated boxes and a backup I'm happy enough with that.
From a Linux Admin person I'm looking for an hour or two chat about hardware. 2 Linux boxes or maybe a QnAP/Synology NAS, ways to replicate or make a 'warm' spare box. What drives - Raid 1,5 or 10 etc. Then once I have the kit (bought or built) another 10 - 20 hours help setting up what I have. Maybe 10 hours if a NAS machine or up to 20 for a Linux solution. I can do the donkey work but need someone to both do and explain what they have done especially around the following:
Building the RAID
Boot Options so it boots if a drive fails
SMB Config for PDC / BDC
RSync
Replication - 'Warm' spare
NIC Aggregation / Load Balance
Mail Server config
LDAP directory
That kind of thing.
Cheers
