Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
This September we plan to launch a new website, and are looking for a someone with experience of home interiors publications to do some work for it. The role doesn't actually involve any writing, but requires the editorial knowledge and experience of home and garden magazines/websites, or the equivalent sections in newspapers.
THE WEBSITE
The website is a wishlist facility combined with a really good search tool. It acts as an effective shopping portal, with the added ability to save wishlists and share them online. As with Facebook, you create a brief profile, and you can then add family and friends allowing them easy access to your wishlists. The idea is that it makes the likes of Christmas shopping very easy. Rather than trek up and down the high street for weeks on end, users can spend a quiet hour online working their way through their family's wishlists, and buying all their Christmas presents online safe in the knowledge that they are actually buying them something they want!
We're also creating some bespoke wishlists - "Ready Made" wishlists as we’re calling them. These are targeted to specific events. We plan to launch with two, and increase the range over the forthcoming year. The two we will launch with are a New Baby List and a Wedding List.
The New Baby List is an exhaustive list of everything parents might need or want when expecting their first baby. It's created for mums by mums, with every item ranked as either "must have" or "nice to have", together with advice from mums on what to consider when making choices. Each item also comes with recommended options to suit a range of budgets and lifestyles. The user can then modify the list to suit themselves - deleting items they don't want, choosing from the recommended options, or adding their own.
The Wedding List is similar, but for obvious reasons, not quite as specific. The key advantage with registering a wedding list on our site is that rather than being a restricted to a single store, users can add items from any store online. So it will be an exhaustive list of all the kinds of things people traditionally ask for - bed linen, kitchen appliances, dining sets etc. The list will come with "Style Files" to inspire the user.
Style Files will cover a range of tastes - for example contemporary, retro etc. Each style file will be a collection of desirable items that the user may want to add to their list, together with suggested stores to browse for items to suit their taste.
THE JOB
We are looking for a journalist to create the Style Files for the "Ready Made Wedding List". This would involve:
- Firstly, defining the styles – probably about half a dozen (but happy to discuss this and take guidance on it).
- Secondly, once the styles are defined, identifying a dozen or so relevant items in that style. For example a dinner service, bed linen, towels, a coffee machine etc (again, we can discuss a more specific list further down the line as it may well vary between different styles).
- Finally, a list of 4-6 stores which sell products in that particular style, so the user has some guidance on where to go browsing for products.
Attached is a mock-up of a sample style file that we've created to illustrate the kind of thing we want to create.
The Style Files will need to be updated periodically to reflect changing fashions and products in-store, so there will be more regular work in this capacity on offer in the future.
DEADLINE
This work needs to be completed by the end of July.
THE TEAM
The website is being produced, built and designed by 3 ex-BBC colleagues. Between us we have 25 years experience working in the BBC's Multiplatform area, creating high-quality content for web, TV and interactive TV.
APPLICATIONS
If you are interested in undertaking this work, please get in touch, and let me know:
- what relevant experience you have
- how many style files you think we ought to offer
- roughly what rate you’d expect to charge for this work. If you are able to offer a "price per style file", that would also be very helpful.
Please feel free to drop me a line if you need clarification of any element of the job.
