Description
Experience Level: Entry
Estimated project duration: 1 day or less
Information for the business: We produce ophthalmic devices
Industry: Healthcare
Design details: We’re looking at developing one of our product lines and looking for initial concept sketches to represent our initial ideas and how they could be incorporated into a new product. The products, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes as pictured, are used to examine the posterior of the eye using mirrors to reflect an LED light source in the unit along the same path as the operator’s reflected line of vision through the binoculars into a patient’s eye in combination with a handheld lens at a working distance to condense the light through the pupil.
We’re looking for some creative, broad sketched concepts within the initial key features below with 2+ concepts. They can be loosely based around our initial ideas, previous products or down a completely new line of thought, such as a sweatband/headband/sunglass frame style unit with batteries contained within. The drawings will ideally be realised in these four views: side, top, frontal and perspective.
Key features for functionality:
• Head mounted – therefore secure fit, comfort and balanced weight are important considerations while it must fit a variety of people’s head, hair, glasses and any headwear
• Lightweight to not overburden and due to user demographics
• Wireless unit and therefore requires room for batteries to be included
• Room for small digital camera and illumination system within binocular unit
• Modular base – enables attachments such as additional filters, magnification lens on the front, laser unit onto binocular unit etc.
• Ease of movement to flip optical unit out of line of vision when not in use
• Two separate adjustment methods (previously used levers/sliders) on the illumination unit for filters and aperture size, must be easy to use without looking directly at them
Target audience: Doctors
Ideas for the visual style: Concept sketches to build from in the future by developing ideas and styles
Where the design will be used: By ophthalmic doctors and opticians http://www.academy.org.uk/tutorials/volkfig4l.jpg
