Description
Experience Level: Expert
Num. of words: 3500
Industry: Technology
Topic: Improving energy efficiency with Bioenergy CHP
Tone: Formal/Professional
Extensive research needed: yes
Extra notes: The take up of CHP technologies is widely encouraged:
• The 2007 Heiligendamm charge was made by G8 leaders to advance CHP and district heating and cooling;
• Targets for CHP in the EU 15 by end of 2010 set at 18% of total electrical consumption (6750 MW of continuous generation)
• The UK adopted the Climate Change Act in Nov 2008, which sets a target for the UK to reduce carbon emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. Low carbon heat and power technologies, such as CHP, and renewable fuels are seen as key to achieve these targets.
• The UK’s Renewable Energy Strategy was launched in July 2009. The strategy outlines how the UK aims to move towards generating 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. CHP fuelled by renewable sources would help to achieve this target.
• A UK Low Carbon Transition Plan published in 2011 sets out a plan to 2020 for transforming the UK’s power sector, homes and workplaces, transport, farming and the management of land and waste, to meet carbon budgets, secure energy supplies, maximise economic opportunities and protect the most vulnerable. Supporting low carbon heat and power technologies, such as CHP, are key to delivering these goals.
• The UK Heat Strategy 2012 also puts renewable heat at the heart of its strategy. Some CHP plants can benefit from Feed-in- Tariff and the Renewable Heat Incentive that legislation now offers to businesses
