I am a Welsh nanna and a certified bookworm, and I proofread other people's writing at home – so that I can pick up the nipper from school at 3 pm – in a smallish village in the valleys of South Wales .
I provide a very user-friendly, unbiased proofreading service to give a final polish to your text before it flies off to impress its intended readers. I will check for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors, at the same time as looking out for layout and consistency problems. If English isn't your first language, I will also make sure the text is written idiomatically, as though it was written by a native-English speaker.
I am an Intermediate-Level Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, and have completed their Introduction and Headway courses. I abide by their strict Code of Practice.
I am trained in the use of BSI editing symbols, Adobe Comment Tools and MS Word Track Changes, but I'm perfectly happy to discuss your project with you, to tailor my work to whatever suits you best.
Before I became a proofreader, I qualified as an accounting technician and have business experience at directorship level, so I am very familiar with the vocabulary of finance. I was a finance administrator in a university for 15 years and also worked for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs for 5 years.
I have 20 years of experience working in professional and academic sports environments (unsurprisingly, rugby union has been a focus) in administration and management roles. Working in these, sometimes high-pressured, businesses has made me adept at producing high-quality work to extremely tight deadlines.
I've spent the last 10 years working as an interviewer for the National Centre for Social Research, one of the UK's largest social research institutions.
I've always had a real passion for food writing, and from quite an early age my preferred bed-time reading was cookbooks.
My specialist areas are fiction (especially crime and fantasy), food writing (see note above), financial reports, business plans, sports reports and social sciences.
My favourite fiction genres are fantasy and sci-fi, steampunk, crime and police procedurals.
