WHO AM I & WHAT DO I DO?
Hi there. I am a professionally qualified and experienced editor with over 15 years of experience in children's publishing. I have an MA in Writing for Young People and work full-time writing and mentoring authors like you.
You can see more about me on my website: www.kelleytownley.com
Rather than a proofreader (who checks text for errors) I am a developmental / content editor. I look at things like structure, pacing, plot, tone, character development, target audience suitability etc. within your writing. Basically I act as a mentor / teacher to authors who want to develop their storytelling skills.
NB: THIS HOURLIE DOES NOT COVER COMPLETE PICTURE BOOKS
I have a separate HOURLIE for full picture book critiques:
https://www.peopleperhour.com/hourlie/professionally-edit-critique-your-picture-book/346717
WHY DO YOU NEED AN EDITOR?
Whether you are planning on self-publishing or submitting to an agent / publisher it is really important to make your book the best it can be before you send it off. Sharing your work with others and getting feedback is a must as often an author is so close to their own work that they can't see where it needs a little help. Friends and family can be great support but when it comes to industry level constructive criticism you need someone with knowledge and experience. This is where I come in.
The children's fiction market is extremely hard to get into and although I can't promise specific results I can help you improve your writing, avoid basic pitfalls and get you nearer the top. You don't want to put months or years into a project only to get bad reviews or a quick rejection because you made an avoidable error.
Send me the first 30 pages of your book (around 7.5k words) and I will produce a report that covers both specific comments on the manuscript and more general thoughts on the story overall.
What you do with this report is completely up to you. I don't pretend to know everything or that following my advice will land you a MEGA deal but not everyone has people around them who have the necessary skills to help us move on with our writing. I do have those skills and can share what I know with you.
I am also nice and friendly to deal with :-)
Best wishes
Kelley
