My studies have enabled me to develop a critical understanding of the common law legal tradition and apply problem-solving and analytical skills to a variety of both legal and non-legal situations. Additionally, my LLB degree has enhanced my skills of argument, evaluation, information literacy and communication. My studies, combined with my work experience, have instilled a keen interest and passion in various aspects of the field of Law within me.
I have work experience as a legal apprentice at the chambers of a senior Attorney-at-Law in Colombo where I drafted petitions, plaints, written submissions and other legal documents for commercial and corporate litigation and property litigation at the District Court of Colombo and arbitration matters at the National Arbitration Center of Sri Lanka. I have also conducted legal research and drafted legal opinions for commercial and corporate litigation including company and minority shareholder protection and property litigation including testamentary matters and adverse possession.
I have had relevant work experience through my internship at the Human Rights Department at the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA), a non-profit organization in Sri Lanka, where I gained exposure to the current issues faced in Sri Lanka after the civil war. I conducted research for public policy papers published by CHA under Sri Lanka’s correctional facilities, ‘Transitional Justice’ and ‘Human Rights and the Environment’, which offered me an insight into the thoughts and opinions of leading figures central to political debate on such human rights problems.
