My name is Terry Thomas and I am a freelance civil engineer/CAD designer with over 15 years experience working for companies such as Arup, jacobs(previously Babtie) and Scot Wilson. I have worked on many high profile jobs throughout Northern Ireland and Scotland. For more information on the projects I have worked on, please visit my website at www.greenvalecad.com and take a look around. I have used AutoCAD for over 12 years, and have designed many housing developments, retail parks etc, and have created drainage designs, sections, road vertical and horizontal alignments, landscaping layouts for private developments, as well as pipe layouts for clean and dirty water.
Area Covered: Drainage Design, Highway Design, Landscape Drawings, CAD Design, CAD Drawings
Work Experience Summary: I graduated from the University of Abertay in Dundee with a BEng(Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering. I was first employed by Kirk McClure Morton (now RPS) In Belfast as a Graduate Civil Engineer in their highways and transportation section where I worked on various projects producing vertical and horizontal alignments for road layouts, carpark layouts and also producing drainage layouts, sections and pipe sizes etc for many commercial and residential developments throughout Ireland.
I then moved onto Scott Wilson in Glasgow, where I worked again in the transportation and highways section working on projects such as the Mosstodloch-Fochabers Bypass near Inverness, and the ‘Three Towns’ Bypass at Ardrossan. Again I worked on alignments but also moved more and more into drainage design, as well as producing drawings using AutoCAD.
From Glasgow I moved back to Northern Ireland and worked for Arup in their Belfast office in their Civil Engineering Department. I worked with Arup on some of the biggest projects in Northern Ietand, such as Junction One Outlet Village in Antrim, the Obel building in Belfast, the extension to the Royal Opera House in Belfast, Dundonald Primary School etc. My capacity in these projects was as senior civil designer and also charged with producing all civil drawings, as well as using XRefs to ensure all other members of the design team had drawings that tied together with ours. I also was responsible for drainage design and the implementation of using SUDS throughout all the projects I worked on.
I spent 4 years with Arup before being approached by Jacobs in 2005 to become their Senior Water Engineer. I again worked on many landmark projects, such as the new Akwa Ibom Airport in Nigeria, where I was responsible for all clean and dirty water throughout the site, as well as producing all relevant manhole schedules, sections, pipe diameters etc. for this development. I also did the same role for many other developments, such as a new pumping main/gravity sewer at Rowlestown near Dublin.
Work in this section became scarce however, and I moved section to the transportation and highway section where I was involved in producing Traffic Impact Assessments as well as designs for projects such as the proposed extension to Bow Street Mall in Lisburn to accommodate John Lewis in Northern Ireland. I worked with Jacobs in until September 2010, when unfortunately I was made redundant due to the current downturn in the economy.
