Gifu Prefectural Board of Education (JET Programme)
The JET Programme is a highly acclaimed and very competitive international exchange programme run by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to promote foreign language education and grass-roots internationalisation throughout Japan.
I held dual positions at the Gifu Prefectural Board of Education. Duties and responsibilties for each position are outlined below.
Co-ordinator for International Relations
Translated materials for Prefectural Board of Education.
Interpreted at meetings, prefectural events and international conferences.
Published bilingual articles about internationalisation in newsletters at prefectural and national levels.
Attended Midterm Conferences covering interpreting, translation and internationalisation training.
Consulted on the writing and recording of prefectural wide school entrance exams and teacher hiring exams.
As a part of a small international bilingual team, I managed and provided counseling for all the JET Programme participants in Gifu Prefecture. This role focused on problem solving between foreign teachers and Japanese staff, as well as training conference planning.
Created and maintained a popular website to provide information on teaching and living in Japan for foreign teachers and foreign residents.
Utilised fluent Japanese and understanding of Japanese culture to facilitate good working relationships between foreign teachers and Japanese staff.
Used interpersonal skills to support and counsel foreign teachers from many different countries and backgrounds.
Planned and ran annual training conferences for up to 120 foreign teachers, and 100 Japanese teachers.
Delivered presentations in Japanese and English on a variety of subjects; cross cultural communication, Japanese study, culture shock etc.

I studied Japanese language and culture at the university for 8 months of the programme. I was also an active member of the karate club. I spent the latter 3 months of the programme as an intern at three major Japanese companies.

Kyushu Electric Power Co, Inc. (www.kyuden.co.jp/en_index.html) I visited various departments and submitted reports in Japanese about their activities.
West Japan Industry and Trade Convention Association (www.convention-a.jp/) I manned the information desk for various conventions, and also assisted in stage management (lighting and audio).
