Nicola Paton founded The Neighbourhoodas a platform in 2006 as platform for her practice as a contemporary art curator in the Midlands. Having graduated from Birmingham City University in 2009 with a MA in contemporary Curatorial Practice. Nicola has worked with Birmingham based artists since 2008.
‘Polski’ a street intervention created by Polish born artist Alicia Rogolaska. This interactive and exciting project involved a projection of Polish words onto passers-by in the high street of Erdington. The project was considered a success as it bravely pointed to the notions of labeling and stereotyping within communities.
‘Conversations with Vanley Burke – Handsworth Re-Visited’ was another project curatored by Nicola Paton under the auspices of The Neighbourhood. The project comprised of a photography exhibition and a documentary film (www.theneighbourhood.org) with Dr Vanley Burke on the migration and settlement of Pan Africans to the UK, in particular to the area of Handsworth, Birmingham. It was an exhibition that touched the hearts of the audience and created an opportunity to promote and celebrate diversity within the Midlands.
Nicola Paton worked within education from 2006 to 2009 organising and technically managing over eight end-of-year student shows in Leicestershire, Birmingham and London. Nicola Paton was the producer of three Further Education & Higher Education student filmmaking residentials that respectively took place in New York, Chicago, Berlin, Prague and Iceland. This filmmaking experience has served her well in documenting and capturing the events accomplished by The Neighbourhood.
An addition to working within contemporary art, Nicola also work's as a freelance producer with LCM Digital. A young production company based in the Midlands with a modest portfolio of work. Her most recent project is a collaboration with LCM, Studio of the North and the Designers Republic's founder and chef Ian Anderson. The team are producing a feature length documentary with 'tDR' covering the 25th year anniversary of 'the Designers Republic' hosted in Tokyo at the Graphic Ginza Gallery.
