Adjusting server setups (both OS and DB), creating and maintaining indexes is often seen as the limits of a DBA role, but I often find that very often poor performance comes from badly written queries and therefore I take great pleasure in code reviews and sharing the knowledge of set-based SQL programming. It is when working of the whole big picture from server setup, through indexing and code reviews all the way to consulting developers on how the connection is used by their application I managed to achieve single query improvements in excess of 1000%
Currently I'm in the process of establishing a new company which mission is to provide businesses, regardless of size, with better chances on their competitive markets by offering bespoke IT solutions, helping to improve and automate their work flow and maintain any currently employed technologies at their best.
Area Covered: SWANSEA, UNITED KINGDOM
Industry: Information Technology and Services
Summary: Here is a selection of jobs I have worked on:
I was tasked with migrating servers of www.hittail.com (close to 300GB of data) to a new data centre with restriction of downtime to the service to be kept below 15 minutes.
Then the job included upgrade, performance optimisation, and ongoing maintenance.
I was employed by a creative agency that developed and maintained a number of online applications for British Sky Broadcasting. For historic reasons every application was evolving separately each using it's own database. With time more and more data was obviously redundant and to no surprise their customers where more and more unhappy having to update a single piece of information in more and more places.
It was decided that at that stage rewriting all the applications was not possible and I was tasked with finding an alternative solution.
During next couple of months I have designed, tested and successfully implemented a daring plan to achieve the feat with minimal downtime.
I was employed to fix performance of a group of in-house applications in a big call centre and insurance processing house. After an initial evaluation and problem analysis I led a 6 months long improvements program including fundamental changes to hardware infrastructure, improvements in the database design, indexing and DB maintenance plans, optimising database and application code, setting co-location, and developing a comprehensive suite of management and executive level reporting.
As a direct result of my work the throughput of the call centre has doubled and customer service levels greatly improved. At the time when I started the company was loosing around 5 hours a week due to system failure and by the time I was leaving there was no down-time for over 3 months.
