Growth driven by mobility, the cloud, big data and the internet of things is creating a platform that itself is creating many new business models and disrupting every aspect of our work and personal lives. Every company will become a technology company in this paradigm shift.
In addition to a 30 year career in financial services, I have held a long term fascination with financial markets and risk. The concept of calculated risk-taking is something that I spend a lot of time reading and thinking about. The balance of risk and reward is never symmetric and where I can find that asymetry there lies opportunity. To be successful in this business, you have to be a continuous learner. I am a voracious reader of financial books, modern classics by individuals like Warren Buffet and George Soros, finance textbooks, and popular non-fiction like What I learned losing a Million Dollars and Liars Poker. All these inputs help to improve my thinking.
Of course, there is no perfect answer, financial markets are always evolving and agility is required. I enjoy nothing more than the constant cut and thrust of markets and the need to adapt to conditions. There is never a dull moment and even after 30 years coming into the office in the morning is a thrill as I look to see what the market is going to throw at me day-by-day. I am also lucky enough to have a team of highly professional and dedicated analysts who help work through the mountain of information needed to analyse the technology landscape and the companies in it.
Overall, investment success requires the usual combination of tremendous hard work, research and persistence. I constantly strive to find the next big winner - they are a rare breed but the satisfaction of making an aggressive call on a name like Facebook at $20 in August 2012 when much of the investment community was so skeptical makes the hard work worthwhile (video clip attached).
