I expect your eyes are swimming from reading freelancers’ profiles: ‘professional’, ‘lots of experience’ - tonnes of unoriginal descriptions like that. So I want to give you a different picture. Why not have a rest for a minute and enjoy reading my profile?
If this was a comic book hero film, I expect you’d want to know what my ‘special powers’ are. Good news – I do have them. My ‘double thing’ is that I am a well-weathered theatre wardrobe professional & seamstress who has worked with the world’s best when it comes to opera, ballet and theatre. I could litter this profile by names dropping. But I want you to learn about me, Lucy. Lucy Richards actually. I don’t like vodka martinis. But I do love diet cokes although neither shaken nor stirred. For obvious reasons.
Anyway, my second wham-bang skill is that I am an efficient, Bubbly with a capital ‘B’ office administrator who has a special knack of keeping clients happy on the phone.
How did I get these two special powers – theatre wardrobe and administration? Simply from being around long enough.
Here is a breakdown: -
THE WARDROBE THING
Like Superman who became aware of his special powers from an early age, I have always been drawn to clothes and accessories. Even my nappies as a baby had to have a plush pin [all reusables back then]. This passion grew so much that I began getting silly amounts of experience in various productions as a Wardrobe Assistant; Dresser; ASM and Wardrobe Mistress. I lay a claim to being the fastest and most efficient seamstress in the west [not that I know many seamstresses in the west]. Sewing, rearranging clothes collections, and arranging exhibitions for museum work – basically I am Mrs Creativity when it comes to wardrobe.
Back to the story. Later I landed a vital role as a wardrobe wizard at Glyndebourne Opera House in East Sussex – known as the best opera house in the world. I dealt with productions galore; and assisted the designer and supervisor for a photo shoot with 25 children for ‘St Matthews Passion’; assisted the designer and supervisor for a film shoot used in the production of ‘Turn Of The Screw’; reorganised the rehearsal costume store; helped with 3 education projects; assisted the costume supervisors in preparation for the Season and the Tour. I was also a key player behind the scenes at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms - ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ (2006), ‘Macbeth’ (2007), ‘L’Incoronazine Di Poppea’ (2008) - and Hampton Court Palace for a special performance of ‘Die Fledermaus’ (2007). My work has even taken me to Hong Kong, Italy, Spain – it seems there are a lot of people out there who love opera!
But it’s not just opera. English National Ballet and other performance companies have also been boosted by my wardrobe skills. Here is a chronology:-
English National Ballet (09/08 - 09/09): Wardrobe Assistant [‘The Sleeping Beauty’; ‘Manon’; ‘The

THE ADMINISTRATION THING
I took a breath of fresh air away from the theatre world, a few years ago. And discovered a new joy in office administration. Sounds boring? I didn’t think so. It was a new challenge and very different to the theatre world. But I was quickly appointed UK Operations Manager for a ski holiday company called Ski Inspired, a family business. I found talking to clients and making sure everything was in order rewarding. It’s worth mentioning that I have competent computer skills, I am fast, efficient and pay great attention to detail. I’ve also done a bit of temping work over the years. I can do any office administration. It’s as simple as that.
So why am I on this website? I’ve just decided to pull the ‘double thing together’. I love a varied working life and have decided to really go for it, freelancing. So if you need expert wardrobe support for your theatre production or you just need someone to fence off your administration overload – just get in touch. Variety is the spice of life, as they say. And my skills are various.
I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks for your time.
