I look forward to hearing from you.
Area Covered: South West
Work Experience Summary: I am hard working and enthusiastic and I pride myself on being very motivated in any task I am given. I enjoy working with people and have continued to work within roles that aid in the development of my customer service skills. As a freelance photographer I have worked both independently and as part of a team. In all my roles I have learnt to work for long periods of time and at hours that would be considered unsociable, I am very comfortable with working on a flexible basis and have been on-call in a previous role.
Through both my photographic and administrative roles I have acquired strong professional skills. I pride myself on having excellent communication skills and am confident in liaising with a variety of clients. Working for myself I have worked to provide a highly professional yet approachable and friendly service. I have excellent administrative skills including file management (both paper-based and digital) communicating with clients, financial management (including invoicing and tax returns) and the creation and development of contracts and procedures.
Whilst studying for my degree and all of my photographic roles I have gained skills of working with a variety of photographic equipment and can work confidently with both film and digital cameras (including 35mm, medium format, low range digital cameras and industry standard such as the digital hasselblad). I have also worked using a range of lighting equipment and developing equipment. As a wedding and fashion photographer I have developed digital Workflow skills from capture to print, I am confident in working in Adobe programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom; I use this digital workflow for my wedding photography business so I can provide a quicker turn around, I have been known to work to very tight deadlines of a couple of days to edit 400 images.
I have excellent general IT skills and can work confidently with both Windows and Mac Systems.
Photographic Work and Experience
I have worked as a freelance photographer for just under 4 years now, in this time I have worked a variety of projects for an eclectic array of clients. I worked for 10 months for Plymouth College of Art as their college photographer, working on call 6 days a week. The role involved attending all college events including open days, award ceremonies, student and external exhibitions and fashion shows. It aided in developing my supervisory skills and enhanced my ability to work both independently and within as well as directing a team; through this role, and whilst studying for my degree, I worked closely with the fashion department and was responsible for organising fashion shoots that included a team of make up artist, hair stylist, models and assistants. I would also be responsible for providing and relevant equipment.
All the work performed within the role was contracted by the marketing department of Plymouth College of Art, all images were copyright of the college and had to follow house style. I would post produce all the images shot and provide them digitally for their image archive. The images were used for a range of outputs including college prospectuses, other printed documentation, exhibitions and web publication.
Within this role I had to be very aware of health and safety regulations, which is also important in my freelance role. I understand and possess public liability insurance.
At the end of my studies at Plymouth College of Art I was awarded the corporate prize as recognition of the development of my photographic business within the college environment, working alongside all the college departments. I also received certification in the form of the PQE from the British Institute of Professional Photographers which was assessed by the local photographer Trevor Burrows.
As a freelance photographer I have worked on a variety of projects including book events for Waterstones and also staff motivational photographic shoots. I have worked closely with hair salons, commissioned to work on beauty shoots for competition entries. I developed a series of images for Nick Evangelista salon in 2008 which was displayed in large print at a hair demonstration. My wedding business has been running successfully for 3 years now, I have worked on both small budget and large budget weddings. This aspect of my business has developed my interpersonal skills and professional skills. I travel to a variety of locations and have used a range of equipment including flash lighting for an evening wedding. I am comfortable managing a large group of people and continue to portray a professional and friendly service. I have my own published wedding website and business related documentation (www.louisevissen.co.uk). One of the most important professional elements of my wedding business is to maintain a comprehensive digital archive as customers do require prints and copies of images up to 12 months after the event. I maintain my own tax records and update my equipment to provide the best service.
I have also attended wedding fairs and worked with venues within Plymouth to advertise my services.
My other photographic hat is working in the fashion industry, this is something I pursued passionately and I was accepted to study my master degree at London College of Fashion. Whilst in London I worked as a research intern for a successful fashion photographer and assisted him on fashion and beauty shoots when possible. The course itself did not work out as planned but I gained a vast insight to the fashion industry. I was fortunate enough to have the chance to exhibit my fashion work at the Association of Photographers gallery in 2008.
I am a very driven photographer, who looks to further my skills at any given moment. I have worked in other non-photographic roles but have always used these skills where possible, especially within my role at Camden council where I kept a visual history of the childrens library displays and events. The skills obtained in my retail, administrative and library roles have been as vital to my photographic career as the photography skills themselves. I have developed excellent interpersonal and networking skills and excellent administrative and management skills.
I always attend any relevant training that could aid in my development and since being within my current role at the University of Plymouth I have been on a customer care course and enrolled on some more IT based courses.
I have successfully worked as a freelance photographer, on the side of my other roles, I am very interested in working in both photographic and administrative roles.
