My Nana for instance taught various art classes and encouraged me to express my talents through drawing and painting whenever I visited and so this creativity continued throughout my childhood, both at school and at home. Like most children I enjoyed watching cartoons and a particular favourite of mine was the Looney Tunes, I would enjoy doodling and sketching the characters on any scrap of paper I could lay my hands on. This has been an ongoing passion and I endeavour to develop this through my career.
It is important to acknowledge there is a history behind everything and I particularly appreciate the history of character design and illustration. One aspect of design still in practice today, is the development process which is important to recognise and appreciate the effort and length of time put into a project. Further key skills I find are necessary to possess are organisation, discipline, concentration and time management, all of which I have applied to complete tasks and meet deadlines in previous jobs. Although all these are important, having natural creativity, an eye for detail and ability to use your initiative, are the fundamentals of a design career and having developed these all my life, I believe I can utilise them in the future.
Education is also important, and so having relevant qualifications will provide a good foundation for a career. At college I obtained both BTEC and A Level Qualifications in the following: Photography; Art and Design; Graphic Design; and Textiles. Studying a wide range of related subjects gave we a wider perspective on several aspects of Art and a chance to look into various creative worlds. Once I completed these courses I had a greater passion and drive for the subject than ever before, and so went on to study Illustration with Animation at Degree level. This allowed me to look further into one of my favourite worlds of Art and widen my skills and understanding further.
In addition to my education I wanted to take my knowledge that extra step and took an after college class on Adobe Photoshop which has proven to be useful with my own design projects and having basic knowledge and understanding on Adobe Illustrator, I was able to finalise Character Designs and Illustrations at University. Going on trips with college and university to various Art Gallery’s, including venues in Manchester and New York, has also expanded my knowledge and appreciation for the various forms of Art. Also whilst at University, I was given a tour of a printing shop in Manchester and gave a presentation of my own work to a Design Team. This opportunity enhanced my knowledge of other team members involved in a Design process. Since leaving education, I have started my own business and currently have two years self-employment experience, during which time I have designed my own advertisements, including business cards and website. Further creations I have completed during this venture include art work created for local businesses and associations, for instance posters, menu’s, logo designs, portraits and character designs.
When I’m not busy at work, I enjoy adding to my portfolio giving me a certain sense of pride and achievement, along with improving my skills and building my confidence. Playing sports in my spare time, including football, swimming and going to the gym, also allows me to build on the skills that will help further my career. Sports give me the opportunity to work alone and to develop communication skills when working as a group. Most importantly, playing as a team means we may be expected to take charge and organise others, or sometimes to sit back and adhere to instructions, and these qualities can be taken from the playing field and put into practice in the work place. Further to this, occasions do occur in sports which involve us having to take constructive criticism and use it wisely, and again I believe these experiences set us up for occurrences like these in our professions.
Finally entering this career will add to my experience and build my confidence whilst giving me the chance to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. I am very eager to learn and am more than willing to adapt and enhance my skills to any requirements necessary. I look forward to being able to pull together as a team to share and enjoy the satisfaction of a project outcome.
