As a freelancer, I worked as an English to French translator, specialising in the translation of audiovisual material, both TV series and feature films, for various clients. This included the complete translation, localisation and formatting of original transcripts for a foreign audience. I was also asked to adapt transcripts for dubbing and voice over purposes.
My experience as a freelancer has given me the capacity to work with tight deadlines, and to develop excellent organisational, analytical and problem solving skills.
I am currently employed as a full time intralingual subtitler (English), subtitling programmes for BBC World and therefore working with tight broadcasting deadlines.
I have been trained in managing the Japanese Translation Unit (main holiday cover) where I am responsible for coordinating freelance interpreters, monitoring the in-house playout systems for subtitling and interpreting, as well as conducting client liaison. This has given me an in depth understanding and hands-on experience of broadcasting.
I graduated from the University of Surrey with an MA in Monolingual Subtitling and Audiodescription. I gained valuable insights into audiovisual translation issues, and learnt to produce subtitles that meet the needs of the viewers, specifically a deaf and hard of hearing audience. I acquired skills for analysing audiovisual materials, developing strategies using professional subtitling software.
I am passionate about languages, culture and media access.
