I have discovered during my time in education, and as a scientist and tax accountant briefly, that writing is what I love to do most and what I am best at. I currently maintain my own blog, Promotional Whitenoise, as a light-hearted counter-balance to my academic work. I have been fortunate enough to find myself in Film academia on the road to being a lecturer and enjoy it very much, but at this stage I am not earning money, which is what brings me here.
Area Covered: Life / Biomedical Science, English Literature, Film.
Work Experience Summary: For the past two years I have spent weekends (while in education) writing about TV adverts for a company called Xtreme Information. My job involved watching the ads and describing their content and themes for a central database. I found this very rewarding and it helped develop my writing skills in a more professional capacity, but ultimately I was forced to leave due to education commitments and the company changing location.
Prior to this, I spent a year at Ernst & Young Tax Accountants learning the tax system and helping mostly foreign clients complete their tax returns. This was another valuable experience for me but I decided to leave to return to education in 2009.
Summary: I have two first-class degrees in very different subjects, Human Genetics and English Literature & Film. I spent some time after the former pursuing an academic career, completing a year of a PhD before realising that it was the wrong field for me. I went on to work at Ernst & Young Tax Accountants and studied tax for a year before returning to education to study English Literature and Film. This has provided me with a better framework for pursuing an academic career in the field I feel truly confident and comfortable with.
