Work Experience Summary:
Photography is my passion and it has played an integral part in my life for over twenty years. Having studied for a BTEC National Diploma at Newcastle College of art, I then proceeded to work onboard the SS Norway as a cruise ship photographer. My job entailed processing thousands of films, all passenger films and our own 35mm and 120 formats. I learned to use the top quality equipment on board with an accurate speed required. I would photograph thousands of people every day then process the films within a deadline. I became proficient at photographing professional portraits using Hasselblad equipment.
I worked long hours with much pressure on all six photographers to get the images.
This first professional job gave me a lot of experience relating to Heads of the company, Captains, Hotel Staff and many thousands of passengers every week.
I returned to Camp Winona to work for the summer, where I had worked previously in 1984, where I taught Photography in a small darkroom. I taught all three units how to process and print B&W film. This was great fun and I became empowered to work at Winona for eleven summers as a counsellor within all the Units, and a Head counsellor in the junior unit. This gave me the opportunity to take charge of a staff of twenty and 70 boys- quite a large responsibility for seven weeks. I liaised with directors of the camps, as well as parents. Eventually I took the wilderness trips leader courses to allow me to be used as a trips leader certified. This gave me the chance to take groups of children and adults out into the wild areas of Maine and New Hampshire, where I taught canoe, and low impact camping skills. This required excellent communication, strong leadership and very good motivational skills.
During my career at Winona, I have taught Arts and Crafts, Photography, Soccer, Mountain trips, canoe trips, woodwork and shooting 22.
All these jobs require great patience, planning and Health and Safety awareness.
I taught at East-Gilling preparatory school for a year, as an assistant voluntary PE teacher. I taught the 9-12 year old boys cricket and rugby skills, as well as driving the mini bus to matches.
I returned to the cruise ship industry for one more year, working on the MV Discovery out of Fort- Lauderdale and the Le Mistral where I was the Chief photographer in charge of the whole photography operation.
My responsibilities where numerous: I ordered stock, kept the books in order and carried out most of the photography and the processing and printing. I had one photographer working part time with me, as I worked in the gallery selling the work.
I returned to work as a freelance photographer in London where I worked for Toady\'s PA magazine out of Harrow. I visited offices on location around London photographing Staff and Heads of businesses.
I have also worked for Countrywide Magazine for Gelert publications, where I photographed people in social situations and documentary type photography.
I took the decision to return to college where I studied part time for a Cert Ed in FE/HE photography and the Visual creative Arts. I studied Education and Management, and Tutored Photography in the College under the watchful eye of a mentor and was assessed regularly on TP. I also taught recreational classes in basic and advanced photography within a workshop/ darkroom and on Location around North Wales for Llyn Photography as a tutor. I used my own scheme of work to tutor a SEN group of students and I became proficient at following set schemes of work and Curriculum for GNVQ3 Photography, A level and foundation art
From all this experience, I was offered the opportunity to teach three groups of students as a supply Lecturer for The Graphics Department in Bangor University. I worked at the college for seven weeks tutoring basic Photography skills to Tourism and Leisure students. I worked with the Heads of Graphics and learned how to formulate affective learning strategies within an HE learning environment. I assessed the work with given schemes and curriculum requirements.
I have also taught English as a secondary language at Camp Beaumont and Kingswood ICT and Outdoor centre in Norfolk, where I followed a set scheme of work and delivered this to students of mixed age and abilities.
My recent teaching and lecturing has seen me deliver effective power-point and slide shows to Lower Junior school children at Old Buckenham Hall school in Suffolk and Thornton school Bucks, where I gave a lesson on Species and Habitats, and a power-point lecture about a career in photography. I worked 3 months as a Session lecturer of BTEC Photography at Stafford College.
I returned to college in the year 2000 to learn about wildlife photography and Life sciences as part of a BA Honours Wildlife Photography Degree. I learned how to use scanners, computers and all the Photographic and Graphics programmes. I also was voted student representative and carried out the role with passion and in a professional manner.
I recently tutored HE photography at Truro College. Masters Cup Wildlife Photo Nominee 2008 .I tutor digital photo workshops with Red Cloud Photography at Richmond Hill Hotel on Weekends.
