We identified the brewing industry as a potential multiple user of the Soft Adventure Play product, and as part of Rupert’s team we developed the first brewery Adventure Play brand, namely Brewers Fayre’s Jungle Bungle.
These were exciting time’s in which I went on to develop multiple family brands for all of the main players in the UK brewing/family restaurant market.
The other big buzz in 90′s leisure was Laser Tag. Once again I was part of that roller coaster ride. I designed, themed and project managed sites from London to Cape Town, Thailand to Japan, Manchester to the USA.
This led to my friendship with Nick Brunt a founder of Laser Quest. Nick and I went on to form Smart Entertainment and develop the Smart Booking System specifically for the playbarn market.
In 1995 I became fascinated by theming, which led to my designing the UK’s first truly immersive themed softplay environment. With Puddletown Pirates I re-wrote the rule books, and fifteen years on it would appear that the vision was sound, Puddletown Pirates at Botany Bay in Lancashire is still one of the UK’s great adventure play success stories and has been a magical part of the lives of two generations of birthday boys and girls.
I like most parents don’t like sitting in industrial spaces surrounded by hundreds of frantic children, so why do people keep building them? The answer is quite simple, most play barns are designed by play equipment providers who want you to spend your money on equipment and not on the creation of wonderful spaces to spend your precious family leisure time in.
Design has taken me all over the world and offered me many fantastic inspirational opportunities in 2007 I returned home to designed Jungle Jim’s at Blackpool Tower which has proved to be a fantastic success and another bench mark for the UK adventure play industry.
So I’ll keep on challenging, I’ll keep on questioning, I’ll keep on setting the bench marks.
Its proving to be a fantastic journey!
