China specifically to learn the language whilst working in a state primary school. I lived and worked here for almost 5 years, where I was required to exclusively speak Mandarin each day as part of my planned immersion in the language.
With its origins in North East China, this is recognised as the ideal place to study Mandarin. Consequently the clarity of my Mandarin is often commented upon by Chinese, especially now back in the UK.
Whilst in Jilin I also undertook a 3 year apprenticeship in a Traditional Chinese Medicine Tui Na clinic, where i would often interpret for Western patients coming from the local joint venture factories.
Since returning to the UK my work has revolved around the Mandarin language. I have undertaken a business venture which has taken me back to China; taught Mandarin at University, Secondary and Primary school level; achieved a distinction in my Chinese > English Translation MA; have undertaken various translation assignments; have worked as the 2011 Census Community Advisor for the Manchester and Liverpool Chinese communities.
I am currently living with my wife, who is Chinese, and our young daughter.
