Dermot has a somewhat soft and gentle voice that conveys a certain sense of reassurance and confidence. His focus is on natural speech and conversational style.
His accent is usually mid-Atlantic with an Irish twang, but with English pronunciation. Where the script has a strong British, Irish, American or London voice, Dermot instinctively follows these dynamics and his voice inclines more fully to the scripted accent.
His recording studio is at his home, which in a rural location and is very quiet. His microphone is a Rode NT1A and the audio-digital interface is a Scarlett 2i2, so the recordings are very clean. The DAW used is Audacity running on Linux.
Dermot original studied voice some 26 years ago with the highly regarded Speech and Drama teacher Lt-Colonel Con O'Sullivan, of Newbridge, Ireland, before he emigrated to London. After returning to Ireland, Dermot resumed studying the Art of the Spoken Word and is currently being coached by Jill Anderson of the Jill Anderson School of Speech and Drama, in Dublin.
Dermot is a mathematical science graduate from Trinity College Dublin. He worked in financial services variously as an actuarial technician, investment analyst and portfolio manager over a 20 year period.
His experience as an investment analyst gives him an in-depth understanding of many industries and the technologies and processes behind them, which helps him sound natural and confident when speaking in technical terms and in using industry specific jargon, where the script requires such language in conveying complex concepts.
