These skills have been put to the test and strengthen with each role undertaken. Applying the Principles of Marketing in a structured and methodical manner coupled with a common sense approach ensures desired results are achieved and measured; right first time and within budget.
Area Covered: Across the whole supply chain within construction, retailing and education
Work Experience Summary: As a Chartered Marketer, I have a wealth of experience promoting branded products and services to relevant markets, in an innovative and cost effective way. Working on a local, regional, and national level; across print, advertising, PR, exhibitions, website development, press and radio, developing and delivering strong communication strategies. Sourcing sponsorship, event management and networking making up the largest proportion of my experience and areas that I really enjoy. Encouraging a ‘must get involved buzz’ has been key in which ever sector I have worked in including, but not exclusively, in construction, retail and education.
I come from a marketing consultancy background with a wealth of partnering experience, successfully implementing multiple projects, managing budgets and engaging stakeholders through natural communication, influencing skills and patience.
Joining the Construction Best Practice Programme just after its launch, in 1999 and helping in its progress into Constructing Excellence I enjoyed nearly ten years where my efforts were fundamental in bringing together and focusing efforts for the way forward collaboratively on a national, regional and local basis. Inspiring a turnaround in perception and gaining a real enthusiasm and momentum for the 'change agenda' within the built environment. Working across the whole supply chain with clients through to manufacturers and suppliers, both large and small, public and private.
My final three years were spent as Regional Director for Yorkshire & Humber where I work side by side with the club network and their steering groups, made up of volunteer members from across the whole supply chain, who became my virtual team.
Involving them in the process of forming the strategy to move forward as a region, ensured their buy-in, committing their own time and effort to achieving bit size chunks of the objectives that were collaboratively set through facilitated workshops.
Barriers to changing processes were overcome by creating a can-do, no blame culture where trust and respect formed a strong foundation. Diversity also added to the dynamics of these groups. Implementing the lessons learned from the best practice and innovation events we held were the key to our success. Our focus on quality, interactive, fun events included presentation from all levels of an organisation, including end users, usually from local communities.
Highlighting business benefits and softer issue benefits gained strengthen the case for action to be followed through. My involvement with this network continued and to this day the group continues to prosper, growing from strength to strength. Recently coming together as one entity, unimaginable from where we started. Opportunities for business development evolved not only for Constructing Excellence but there were a healthy cross fertilisation of partnerships formed for members as well.
In an industry which suffered from fragmentation and an inability to capture and effectively share knowledge from one project to another, Demonstrations were a highly valuable tool for projects to share valuable lessons learned and a means of more easily ensuring future projects adopted these techniques. Identifying and recruiting suitable organisations, tracking and measuring project progress and disseminating this information effectively, really kept me on my toes.
More recently I have undertaken numberous projects two of the most interesting being:
∙ A six month project with New College Telford where I reversed recruitment numbers from well below last year’s figures into positive numbers for Higher Education College by uniting management, support and teaching staff. Capturing student participation, enthusiasm and essence; producing quality content for radio, press, literature and website coverage.
∙ Website development and promotional literature for a group of under privileged individuals on the West Bank in Luxor, Egypt. Where my work to breaking down barriers, changing attitudes and introducing new working practices continues, with the aim to improve and secure a more sustainable future for the local community. The website sun55life-luxor.com, is a work in progress. I have included this link to give you an idea of the
standard of my work.
Education Summary: Educated at Turton High School, Bolton to ‘O’ level standard, I obtain my ‘A’ level equivalents in Vancouver, Canada; obtaining seven ‘O’ level including Maths and English and three ‘A’ level equivalents, in English, Algebra, Physics, Social Science. I returned home to Salford College where I obtained my HND in Business and Finance as well as my Diploma in Marketing in 1990; becoming a Chartered Marketer some years later in 2005.
I have also study ‘A’ level German and obtained an ‘A’ level equivalent in Greek.
CPD – I have undertaken extensive personal and professional development over the last fifteen years in subjects as diverse as IT to sustainability, project management through to diversity.
