I began my career on 2nd October 1978 for a company called Sheffield Insulations, based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. At that time they were the largest distributor of insulation products to builders' merchants in the United Kingdom. I was initially employed as a trainee programmer in the data processing department and attended night school at Sheffield City Polytechnic while being trained on the job as a COBOL programmer, writing computer programs for commercial applications in a batch processing environment, and progressing to a senior programmer role before relocating to London, England.
As I developed in my trade my employers, and the clients for whom I worked as a contractor, discovered I had a natural aptitude for the craft, I was given more interesting and challenging work, moving into systems programming on real time transaction processing systems and developing code in CORAL-66 and later BCPL and C, and in a number of assembly languages.
I also developed applications in FORTRAN and a number of more or less standard variants of BASIC, on a range of (mainly Honeywell) mainframe computers and minicomputers, and when I became a freelance programmer in mid-1985 I found there was a lot of demand for C systems programming on Honeywell minicomputers. At the time, the IBM PC and PC-compatibles were becoming more widespread, and since 1986 I have worked almost exclusively on IBM PCs and their various derivative architectures, using Microsoft operating systems, tools and technologies.
For the 7 years prior to relocating to the west coast of Ireland in September 2002 I was a relational modeller and database designer, developing applications in Microsoft Access 97 and 2000, and Microsoft SQL Server, for blue chip clients, banks and pharmaceutical companies in and around London.
Since arriving in Ireland I have continued to work with Microsoft products, but have diversified my skill set into open source technologies: for the last 9 years I have been designing databases using MySQL and PostgreSQL, developing online applications in PHP, and performing systems adminstration online on Linux web servers.
I continue to provide consulting and programming services using Microsoft Office Access 20xx. I am a Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming specialist, as the code available to view and download on this site demonstrates.
I am an experienced and able programmer with over 32 years industry experience in a number of technical roles working on a wide range of commercial applications.
Area Covered: United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Worldwide
Work Experience Summary: I have over 32 years experience as a computer programmer and IT consultant, and worked as a freelance programmer in the UK for almost 20 years.
I have very strong relational database design and implementation skills, using mainly Microsoft Access, but also Microsoft SQL Server.
For the last 10 years I have also been involved in web server hosting, set up and systems administration, as well as developing my skills in PHP using MySQL as the database server.
