The first of these was sixteen years working in Public Relations & Marketing. I began my career as a Publicity Trainee for the country's largest manufacturer of shoe machinery and was fortunate to recieve an all-round training in copywriting, editorial and press release writing, newspaper layout, graphic design and even photography. Subsequently specialising in PR, I progressed through a number of consultancies and at the age of 28 was appointed an Associate Director of one of the country's largest regional agencies. My client group covered 'Blue Chip' names such as London Regional Transport, British Telecom, part of the Lucas Group and member companies of Siebe Group. In 1987 I went freelance and specialised in high tech PR, representing EC based companies looking to set up in the UK prior to the formation of the Single European Market in 1992. However, devaluation of Sterling at the end of 1991 forced these clients to make cut-backs and I faced the beginning of 1992 without a single client.
There is then an eight-year gap, before Phase Two of my career history kicks-in. During that time my wife and I set up a small business selling jewellery at local fairs and markets. While this was originally intended as a 'stop-gap, we both enjoyed this simpler life-style and I never got around to job hunting again!
However, I also have a low boredom threshold so Phase Two begins in 2000 with the formation of Silver Tabby Imports, my own company specialising in importing and wholesaling costume jewellery. This made use of all my PR and Marketing skills and I have derived great satisfaction from producing all my own literature, product photography, developing my web-site and organising Trade Fair stands.
This has also given me a completely new skill set geared to product sourcing in China. I have an extensive network of contacts in China and huge knowledge to share of how business is done in the Far East.
In 2010, I sold my business and am now looking for consultancy work, which effectively uses my professional skills.
