Software developer achievements during PhD
Developed a new method of solving parabolic partial differential equations, with the interior of a domain being controlled by one function, the boundary by another. Some of this work has been published – details below. Potential applications include cyclone modelling and bacterial film growth.
Presented the published work at conferences at Reading and Strathclyde universities.
Gained 4 years' experience of Matlab and C, including installation of third-party software libraries Sparskit and Sundials.
Installed Fedora and Linux Mint on two laptops.
Taught Matlab (references available).
Converted Fortran code to C.
Assisted the psychology department at the University of Leeds, providing VB6 programs for data processing.

Work Achievements as a software developer
At BemroseBooth Derby, 1990 – 2006:-
Amended front-end of a warehouse location system for vouchers – written in VB6 and SQL Server.
Wrote a ‘batching’ program in VB6 – this assigns printing of calendar/diary files to various machines, based on a complex criteria of ink colours, plate size, imposition, orientation, and run-time availability. The program makes calls to a Sybase (v12.5) database via ODBC, and required design of a graphical interface.
Fifa World Cup 2002 tickets - met representatives of Fifa in Barcelona and Manchester to discuss the data formatting. Wrote specifications for this formatting in VB and PReS and led team of three programmers to implement the coding.
Wrote and maintained backup and server systems, on Solaris (Samba) and
VMS (Pathworks) computers.
Installed network software on department’s PCs, and resolved general
networking problems.
Controlled the generation and management of public/private keys for encryption.
Upgraded the programming skills of the department from Fortran to VB.
Installed e-mail for the first time in the company, in 1996.
Maintained Oracle database for Ford microfiche.
Summary of previous employment:-
BP and Shell: enhanced/debugged seismic analysis programs, using Vax Fortran 77.
Bank of England Printing Works: adapted CAD package for banknote design. Also
wrote program to display spoilage rates of banknotes, using Assembler on a PDP-11.
BAe Systems and Plessey: radar studies, including Kalman filter techniques, coding
these (in Fortran) from scientific papers.
National Nuclear Corporation: mathematical modelling of secondary sodium circuits
of a (fast reactor) nuclear power station.
