I have experience in many different mediums and processes in both 2D and 3D and have strong conceptual skills.
Area Covered: London
Work Experience Summary: I have worked for many high profile clients including Anish Kapoor, Marc Quinn, The Chapman Brothers, Keith Tyson, Madame Tussauds, The National Theatre, The Tate, Disney, The White Cube Gallery, Frieze Art Fair, London Fashion Week, Tracey Emin and many others. My specific duties on these projects differ greatly in nature. Generally the job involves creating unusual objects with a very fine finish using resins, wax, metals and wood or installing site specific works of art and exhibits in galleries and shows. I have a portfolio of photographs of various projects I have worked on which I am happy to provide if you are interested. Below is a short list of skills I use in the job.
Managing a team:
Casting and fettling waxes for the Chapman Brothers and Marc Quinn. These are used for lost wax casting into silver and bronze. As the only permanent worker during these projects I managed a team of up to 6 people over several months casting and cleaning waxes of small models, humming birds, orchids, human skeletons, power tools, insects and numerous other objects. I made sure materials were ordered, deadlines were met and quality was maintained. I trained new workers in the processes involved and safety guidelines and made sure things generally ran smoothly.
Coordinating a project:
A set of life-size forensic investigators for the artist Harland Miller and the White Cube gallery, which were exhibited in Hoxton Square in 2008. I made the samples, took reference photographs, posed the figures and then directed a team of 3-7 people to manufacture the finished pieces. I assisted the artist to install them in the public green in Hoxton square.
Mold-making and casting:
I have been through this process with many objects, from a life size orchid to a life size elephant and bigger. For Keith Tyson’s Large Field Array’ project I had my whole body molded and cast. I then cleaned up and constructed the resulting fibre-glass pieces to make a faithful reproduction of my body as an acrobat. As a piece of Tyson’s show it has now been exhibited in Las Vegas, New York and Amsterdam.
During many projects I have had experience of using various materials including latex, silicon, 2 part polyurethane, polycarbonate, acrylic, Perspex, epoxy, polyester resin and GRP, many different glues, carbon-fibre, Kevlar, Wax, Plaster of Paris and Jesmonite.
Drawing - technical and diagrammatic, most recently for preliminary drawings for Andreas Golden, for a sculpture exhibited at the White Cube Gallery in 2008
Painting - scenic & model painting, with water based acrylic paints, spraying with cellulose & 2-pack.
Sculpting - wax, milliput, wood and polystyrene carving, plaster, aqua-plastic.
Fine finishing and fettling - many fibre-glass, metal and plastic sculptures up to a gallery standard.
Grinding, sanding and polishing metals to a mirror finish.
Installation of shows, basic rigging and carpentry, basic metalwork
Operation of power tools and specialist machines:
Table saw, band saw, orbital sanders, angle grinders, power, pillar and hand drills, polystyrene wire cutter, linisher, reciprocating saw, jigsaw, power file, flocking machine, glass cutter, fine cutter, tapping screws, torque wrench, high pressure wax injector, degasser, compressor, brad, airbrush, polishing machine, sewing machine, Dremmel and many more!
