Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Aim: A simulation based investigation of delay-loss correlation in packet buffers
Synopsis: Network emulators like Netem de-correlate packet loss events from periods of high delay. However during normal operation landline (but not necessarily wireless) broadband networks will generally only feature loss during periods of high delay and therefore significant buffer backlog. This project will evaluate the level of this correlation by simulation using MATLAB, and then evaluate the possible effect of this in emulator inaccuracies.
Objectives of the project:
• Understand the operation of queues in packet networks, and how queueing theory is used to model packet queueing in packet networks
• Understand the operation of the network emulator, NetEm
• Understand the inherent limitations in the operation of the network emulator, NetEm; specifically that it de-correlates packet loss events from periods of high delay.
• Build and testing a simple M/D/1 queue model in MATLAB
• Measure the correlation (Pearson’s R) between delay and loss in the M/D/1 queue model
• Build and testing an N*on-off/D/1 queue in MATLAB
• Measure the correlation (Pearson’s R) between delay and loss in the an N*on-off/D/1 queue
• Conclude on the effects of this measures of correlation for the operation of NetEm and similar network emulators; conclude on how e.g. NetEm could be modified to account for this correlation.
