Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
The Thin Line is about to launch but, with a lot of information pulled from various sources, we need someone with a formal writing style to rewrite all the information about mental health & the emergency services. All information and writing that we would like rewritten will be sent in word documents. Experience in psychology/mental health/emergency services would be a huge benefit for this project
About The Thin Line:
‘91% of the police force have experienced stress and poor mental health at work. Emergency services personnel are more likely to experience a mental health problem than the general workforce but are less likely to take time off work as a result’. Mind Website
‘The number of paramedics signed off work with depression or stress increased by more than 40% last year.’ – BBC
‘Almost three quarters (71 per cent) of emergency services personnel said their organisation did not encourage them to talk about mental health, and nearly half thought their colleagues would be treated less favourably if they disclosed a mental health problem at work’ – Mind, Blue Light 2018 Report
‘One in five police officers in UK suffer from PTSD’ – The Guardian, May 2019
When a family member tried to take his own life, it was a shock to the whole family. At the time, he was a high-ranking police officer who had been in service for more than 30 years. Not even his immediate family knew the mental suffering he had been experiencing.
As a policeman, he had spent his years working his way through the ranks, working as a detective, running forces and specialising in anti-terrorism. He had signed the Official Secrets Act on 90% of the situations he handled, meaning he was unable to bring any of his work home or process any of the situations he’d been through with anyone, at all.
Even though the Official Secrets Act is essential for the security and safety of society, he had conditioned himself to also keep most of his life and his feelings a secret. On the outside, he lived a carefree, happy life. The first one on the dance floor, he loved music, making jokes and looking after the people around him. When he disappeared with the intention of taking his own life, it was difficult to comprehend the inner torment he must have been feeling in the build-up to that date.
Our overall goal is to encourage and supplement existing support that is already available. There is not one single charity that is dedicating entirely to connecting employees of the emergency services to vital mental health support. Employees of the emergency services will witness more trauma and face more intense situations than the majority of the public will never experience. We want to ensure that people feel they have an outlet and support network, to maintain positive mental health and prevent future tragedies.
