Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
We publish a magazine aimed at Carers of disabled people.
Brief: Taking care of your mental health and the mental health of the person you care for
Number of words: 1200
Care can be mentally exhausting for both carer and the person they care for. It’s
important for carers to consider ways to keep their mental health in good order because of
its links to morale and indeed, physical wellbeing – and the carers ability to discharge
their responsibilities.
Disabled people receiving care can become agitated and frustrated at their situation,
which in turn can affect their physical health - and in some senses, make it more difficult
to care for them.
We are looking for a piece that firstly recognises and describes the challenge of keeping
‘well’ mentally.
The feature should be presented as a collection of bullet point ideas (each backed up with
an explanatory paragraph). This feature aims to give disabled people and their carers
ideas about how to cope better.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please include:
Up to 10 different ideas regarding how carers can ‘look after themselves’
mentally – such as dedicating time to rest, socialising, sharing issues with similar
people in online forums etc.
Up to 10 different ideas regarding how people being cared for can ‘look after
themselves’ mentally – such as finding ways to keep the mind active, socialising
and where possible, keeping active, mobile and retaining a little independence
too. (We would like to aim this feature at a variety of readers with different
disabilities and care needs and the ideas presented should reflect this.)
Notes on how mental and physical wellbeing affect each other and how each are
vitally important in the care process.
Notes on carer’s allowance and how to claim it.
Notes on organisations/resources that offer support for carers.
